Major reshuffle expected in Maharashtra Police leadership

The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Police plan hard crackdown on drugs menace in city

RISING consumption of drugs by youth of Nagpur has sounded alarm bells in the police department. Alarmed by the menace threatening to ruin young lives, Nagpur Police have planned a severe crackdown on illicit trade and consumption of drugs. After raiding 86 premises across the city and seizing drugs worth Rs 20 lakh in a single day, cops are now preparing the list of clientele of the drug traffickers. “Once the list is prepared, these ‘customers’ will face action under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,” informed Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar, on Tuesday, while talking to media. Two held for jewellery thefts from dead Covid patients in Mayo Hospital

Tehsil police arrested two persons for stealing the belongings of persons who had died from the novel coronavirus at the Covid-19 facility at Mayo hospital. The accused are employees of Speak and Span company. The police have recovered stolen valuables including gold ornaments and mobile phones from their possession. Rural Police arrest man involved in preparing fake driving licences

The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Nagpur Rural Police arrested a man for being involved in preparing fake driving licences on Tuesday. The man was working from Mauda area of Nagpur district. The accused was identified as Nawab Jamir Baig (50), a resident of Om Sai Nagar, Mauda.According to police, Baig owns Nawab photo studio. He was running a parallel RTO office in the studio. He used to issue bogus licenses from this studio. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ola got the information about him. SP Ola instructed the LCB to raid the studio. UP man used prosthetic leg to smuggle drugs, arrested

A 24-year-old youth was arrested by Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Nagpur police who was hiding Mephedrone (MD) and Hashish drugs in his prosthetic leg. The police have seized 131 gm of MD worth Rs 13.10 lakh and 130 gm of Hashish worth Rs 39,000/-.   The accused was identified as Salman Khan Nadir Khan (24), a  resident of Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh. Picnic turns into tragedy : Father and son drowns in Zilpi Lake

A picnic turned into a tragedy as a man and his 12-year-old son drowned in Zilpi Lake in the Hingna area on Monday morning. The family of four - husband, wife and their two sons - had gone to the lake to celebrate the birthday of their younger son, police officials said. The deceased are identified as Abdul Asif Abdul Gani Sheikh (35) and his son Abdul Chahbil Abdul Asif (12). According to police, the family is residents of Tipu Sultan Chowk in Yashodhara Nagar area. A stepfather, who served four years in jail after being convicted of molestation, was killed by a teenage girl at her house in the Hingna police station area on Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Dhnyaneshwar Gatkar (60), a resident of Seloo town in Wardha district. According to police, the 17-year-old girl lives with her mother at Sawali village, near Hingna. Her father passed away when she was just one-year-old. Since then, her mother has been working as a housemaid. The girl is studying in Standard XI. PSI and Constable netted red-handed by ACB with bribe of Rs 5,000

A Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) and his writer, attached to Kuhi police station, were caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000/- on Monday. The arrested accused include PSI Bharat Ramesh Thite (30) and Constable Amit Shankar Pawar (28). An ACB official informed that the complainant runs a Dhaba on Umred Road and is a resident of Chitnis Nagar of Tajbag. PSI Thite was in-charge of Panchgaon beat of the police station. City police conducts ‘blanket raids’ at 86 locations of drug peddlers

Nagpur police on Monday carried out a massive drive against drug peddlers by raiding 86 premises across the city and seizing drugs worth over Rs 20 lakh in one go. A press release informed that a simultaneous raid was carried out at 86 premises of habitual drug peddlers across the city. A total of 130 gm Mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 13 lakh,  133 gm of Charas worth Rs. 7.8 lakh and  2.5 kg Ganja worth Rs. 37500/- was seized during the action. Around 20 persons were arrested by the police during the action. The police were busy in registering offences under Arms Act, Gambling and Prohibition Act late in the night. This crackdown against the drug peddlers would be further intensified in the days to come, the press release claimed. 62-year-old woman killed by Granddaughter, boyfriend for money

MIDC police on Sunday claimed to have solved murder case of Vijaya Tiwalkar (62) by arresting four persons. Shockingly, the woman’s granddaughter and her boyfriend are the prime accused in the murder case. The accused are identified as Nilesh Paunikar, Aarzoo Khan, Farid Ansari, Tajir Khan, granddaughter of Vijaya and her boyfriend. A 32-year-old man was killed after his bike skidded on the Chikhali flyover and he fell off from the bridge in Shanti Nagar area on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Rajkumar, a native of Karnataka. He was living in a rented accommodation in Koradi and working in a company. The accident occurred around 9 pm when he was heading towards Koradi on a motorcycle with a pillion rider who also works with him in the company. When the two were passing through the flyover, the bike skidded due to sudden rain. After hitting the railing of the bridge, Rajkumar lost his balance and fell off the bridge. IT Commissioner booked for raping doctor

An Income Tax (IT) Commissioner posted in Bengaluru was booked by Khaparkheda police for sexually exploiting a doctor and also carrying out her abortion. The accused was identified as Sudhadira Punnoswami Balan (35), a resident of 43, Main Road, Pondicherry. According to Khaparkheda police, Balan was living in Nagpur for training at National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in 2019 while the complainant was working as a resident doctor at a government hospital. They befriended when Balan came to the hospital for treatment. When the girl told him that she is preparing for UPSC, Balan gave his mobile phone number to her. Soon after, Balan told her that he was unmarried and wanted to marry her. On the pretext of marriage, Balan sexually exploited the girl for several months and also filmed her obscene pictures. Posing himself as cop, a home guard sexually exploiting a doctor on pretext of marriage for three years. Ajni police have booked Suraj laxman Madavi (31), a resident of Arjun Nagar, Katol, on rape charges. According to police, Madavi befriended with the girl on Facebook in 2018 when she was student of ophthalmology. The girl was living with her mother at Nagpur while her father was staying at village to supervise their farming. Madavi introduced the girl as a cop. Loved was blossomed between the two. On way for surgery, patient falls off ramp at hospital, dies

A man died after falling from the ramp at Super Specialty Hospital on Saturday morning. The incident sent shockwaves across the hospital employees and a large number of people were gathered to the spot. The deceased was identified as Tulshiram Pandurang Bangade (67), a resident of Plot NO. 118/A, Siraspeth Chowk, Umred, Nagpur. According to police, Bangle was suffering from a urological illness for the last one and a half-year. Earlier, he was admitted to the hospital. On Saturday morning, he came to the hospital as doctors are supposed to have a surgery. Truck driver burnt alive after truck falls into river

A truck driver was burnt alive after his vehicle, carrying consignment of country liquor, fell into a river and caught fire. The accident occurred near Ruikhairi village in Butibori police station area in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The deceased was identified as Hemraj alias Pintya Devidas Pingale (25), a resident of Masal village, Teshil- Lakhandur, District - Bhandara. According to police, the truck was laden with consignment of country liquor and heading towards Nagpur. He lost control over the vehicle when he took turn on Chandrapur-Nagpur road. As a result, the truck went off the road and fell into the river. The liquor catches fire within a minute and Pingale burnt alive. Youth killed, body set on fire

A youth was killed by two drunkards and set the body ablaze after pouring it with fuel at Ridhora village in Katol police station area. The police have arrested Akshay Ramdas Ghicheria (31) and Mangesh Eknath Jichkar (32), both residents of Katol, for killing Angad alias Bittu Ashokrao Kadukar (28), a resident of Ridhora village. According to police, Kadukar had recently purchased a jeep. Since then, he was use to roam in the four-wheeler in nearby areas. Two murders within a span of four hours rocked the city on Friday. While a notorious goon was brutally killed in Kotwali, an aged-woman found dead with her throat slit in MIDC area. In Kotwali, Shanu alias Shahnawaz Khan (19) was killed by three assailants over old-rivalry when he was returning home on an Activa at around 10.30 am. More than 55% e-pass applications rejected by City police

THE City police have denied permission to 11,044 persons who had submitted applications for e-passes to travel within State or out of State. Similarly, the police have booked a whopping 600 motorists for travelling without e-pass since April 23. As part of the lockdown imposed in the State, e-passes were made necessary for inter-district as well as inter-state travel. Maharashtra Police had started issuing e-passes from April 22 to stop unnecessary travel while tackling the second wave of COVID-19. As per data, since April 23, Nagpur Police received a total of 21,227 applications for granting of e-pass. Of them, while 11.044 (55.90 per cent) applications were rejected, 9,361 (44.09 per cent) e-passes were issued. Out of the total issued passes, 6,739 (71.99 per cent) were issued for inter-district movement while 2,185 (28.01 per cent) were issued for inter-state movement (out of Maharashtra). Godman claims to cure Coronavirus, arrested

A Godman who claimed to cure novel coronavirus infection of positive patients was arrested under anti-superstition law by MIDC police on Friday. The Godman also claimed to trigger ‘rain’ of money, said Sr Police Inspector Yuvraj Hande. The accused was identified as Shubham Tayde (22), a resident of Lane No. 20, Ekatmata Nagar, Nagpur. A married woman, living with parents, committed suicide by hanging herself in Kotwali area. The deceased was identified as Riya alias Pournima Sumeet Awthankar (34), a resident of Chitnis Park, near Bhart Vyam Shala. According to police, Riya studied MCA and married to Sumit in 2016. Sumit is working as engineer with a private company in Pune. She returned to maternal home with her son after family feud in November last year. Later, her husband and father-in-law were infected with novel coronavirus and admitted to hospital as their condition deteriorated. Riya had visited their house in Pune but Riya’s husband and his family members were unable to discuss the issue due to their bad health. Govt cancels condition of 15 years service for SRPF personnel to get transfer in District police

In a major decision, the State Home Department decided to cancel the condition of 15 years of service required for transfer of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawans in the District Police units. The Home Department issued a Government Resolution after Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil conducted a meeting. State Environment and Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray, ACS Home Manu Kumar Shrivastava, Director General of Police Sanjay Pandey and ADG Archana Tyagi were present in the meeting. Earlier, the condition for transfer of SRPF personnel was 15 years of service. It has been decided to do it for 12 years now. Newborn girl found abandoned

A newborn girl child was found abandoned in bushes in the Koradi area on Tuesday morning. The child was spotted by a passerby who promptly alerted the police. The Koradi police rushed to the spot and admitted the girl to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H). The police have launched a probe to identify the biological family of the girl. District to get 25 oxygen plants in June

CONSIDERING the high requirement of medical oxygen during the latest wave of Novel Coronavirus, a total of 25 medical oxygen generation plants will be installed in Nagpur city and district in June. Of these, four plants are cryogenic oxygen plants which create molecular oxygen at relatively high purity. The oxygen plant network is expected to increase availability of oxygen-supported beds in the urban and rural areas for COVID-19 patients. Chief Executive Officer Yogesh Kumbhejkar of Zilla Parishad Nagpur informed ‘The Hitavada’ that the administration was trying to install the plants at the earliest so that there would be no shortage of oxygen beds for COVID-19 patients. Rape accused escape from hospital, arrested

An under-trial prisoner escaped while being treated for tuberculosis from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H)  late Monday night. He was accused in a gang-rape case reported in year 2017. Within eight hours of his escape, Pardi police nabbed the accused from Bhavani Nagar area and handed him over to Imambada police. ACB catches Deputy EE of MSEDCL while accepting bribe from contractor

A Deputy Executive Engineer (Deputy EE) of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) was caught red-handed by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Nagpur on Tuesday while accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000/-. The official demanded the bribe to accept a completion report of High Tension (HT) Line work to the contractor, ACB officials said. Deputy EE Gajanan Baliram Dabre (54) was posted at Khapa sub-station of MSEDCL in Saoner tehsil. Dabre will be produced in the court on Wednesday by ACB. An ACB official informed that the contractor had shifted three HT Lines from residential area. He approached Dabre and submitted a completion report. To accept the report, Dabre demanded Rs 30,00/- bribe to him. The contractor then approached ACB Nagpur and lodged a complaint. The ACB officials verified the demand and laid a trap. School principal and clerk arrested by ACB while accepting bribe from retired teacher

A Principal and a Senior Clerk of Pragatik High School, Koradi, caught red-handed by Anti-Corruption Bureau Nagpur on Monday while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,500/- from a retired teacher to sanction his pension proposal. Principal Anil Sagne (57) and Clerk Prashant Kuralkar (52) are cooling their heels behind the bars and they would be produced in the court on Tuesday by the ACB. An ACB official informed that the complainant retired from the school as assistant teacher on August 31, 2020. As per the rules, the school administration have to send the pension proposal of retiring teacher to Education Officer (High School) six months prior to his date of retirement. Truck crushed 12-year-old girl to death

Tension prevailed at Mankapur square when a 12-year-old girl was crushed to death by a speeding truck in front of her father on Monday. The driver managed to escape from the spot after the accident. According to police, Alankrita Mahesh Nunnare, a resident of Mankapur, was riding pillion on the motorcycle of her father to buy a fish pot at 10 am. When the motorcycle was passing through Mankapur square, a speeding truck (MH-04/CG-4643) came from another side and brushed against the motorcycle. Meat shop owner killed by distant relative over shop dispute

A meat shop owner was murdered by his distant relative and his three accomplices in Patankar Chowk following an altercation over a shop of the accused on Sunday. The police have arrested Kunal Bawne (30), a resident of Patankar Chowk, Raju Marotrao, a resident of Pachpaoli; Vickey Bawne and Balraj Katre for killing Jagdish Madne (47), a resident of Patankar Chowk. A Covid-19 positive woman committed sucide by jumping off the fifth floor of AIIMS Nagpur on Thursday night, police officials said. The deceased was identified as Renuka Ramesh Aldhare (45), a resident of Takalghat Colony No. 2, Hingna. According to police, the woman was admitted in Covid ward on the fifth floor of the hospital on May 3. Due to the severe effect of Covid on her mental health, she was talking to herself. Covid positive youth found dead at home in Sonegaon

A youth infected with Covid-19 was found dead at his house in Bhende Layout in Sonegaon police station area on Thursday. 41 hospitals await DCH nod for want of medical oxygen

A TOTAL of 41 hospitals are awaiting approval from the district administration to operate as Dedicated COVID Hospitals (DCHs) due non-supply of medical Oxygen. The administration is presently concentrating on ensuring oxygen supply to the already established COVID hospitals. “Permission has not been given to these hospitals so far to cater to daily medical oxygen demand of the already established hospitals,” said District Collector Ravindra Thakre. Major fire in paper mill near Bazargaon

  A major fire broke out in Indus Paper Boat Company at Bazargaon on Amravati road on Monday evening, around 50 km from Nagpur. Nobody was injured in the incident but several hundred tonnes of raw material was gutted. As many as four fire tenders were struggling to douse the fire on factory premises. An offence of culpable homicide was registered against a contractor of Nagpur metro rail in a death of a lady security guard on March 5. The woman had accidentally hit ropes erected across roads to restrict movement of vehicles on the over-bridge. The deceased was identified as Manisha Viroj Wasnik (45), a resident of Imambada. According to police, Wasnik was working as a security guard at AIIMS hospital. She was going to the hospital on a two-wheeler at 4.45 am. Two youths threw petrol bomb at petrol pump in Lakadganj

Two youths attempted to set a petrol pump afire by throwing a petrol bomb following a quarrel over wearing face masks in Lakadganj police station area on Saturday.
