Major reshuffle expected in Maharashtra Police leadership

The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Army exam paper leaked, racket busted at Nagpur

As a part of sweeping raids across the state, a joint team of Thane and Nagpur Crime Branch swooped at Maurya Sabhagriha in Parvati Nagar under Ajni Police Station area on Sunday early morning and busted a racket involved in leaking of Army Recruitment examination papers. More than 10 accused have been arrested from the hall along with aspiring candidates. The students came to get copy of the papers,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Crime Ranjan Kumar Sharma. Sadar police books SICOM's ex-Regional Manager in fraud case

An ex-Regional Manager with State Industrial and Investment Corporation of Maharashtra (SICOM) was booked by Sadar police for accepting bribe of Rs. 15.50 lakh for sanctioning loan to a city builder. The builder had applied for loan of Rs. 10 crore in year 2014. The loan case was rejected and hence the builder asked for return of the money but the ex-RM washed his hands of entire episode prompting latter to approach police. According to police, Director of Trimurti Infra Pvt Ltd Sachin Bhimrao Pathre (29), a resident of Mata Nagar, Godhni, had filed a loan case with SICOM on September 1, 2014. He met then Regional Manager, Milind Vasudeorao Ingle (56), wherein latter allegedly demanded Rs 5.50 lakh as bribe to sanction the case. Dr Meenakshi Gajbhiye (Wahane), Dean, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), on Wednesday went underground even as she knocked on court doors seeking pre-arrest bail in the bribery case. Caught in a bribe case after she allegedly demanded Rs. 15,000 to clear a bill for supplying medicines, Dr Gajbhiye failed to appear before Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today as was directed. Meanwhile, Vijay Mishra who accepted the bribe on behalf of Dr Gajbhiye was put behind bars on Tuesday. Since the ACB trap occurred in late Monday afternoon, Dr Gajbhiye was just booked and directed to appear on Tuesday for joining investigation. A youth was seriously injured when his friends attacked him over old rivalry at Wardha road in Dhantoli area on Saturday.   According to police, Prafulla Rajesh Dhondare (21), a resident of Narendra Nagar, his friend Rohan Bhute (21), were going to home at 3.30 pm. While crossing Wardha road, accused Akash alias Michael, Amol Parad and Nitin Parad, all are residents of Raju Nagar approached the duos and slapped Rohan. Double murder at Khaparkheda

A double murder came to fore during investigation of finding of unidentified bodies of a youth and a married woman. Khaparkheda police have arrested husband of the deceased women in this connection. However exact reason behind the murder could not be ascertained.  According to information, bodies of a youth was found at Walni village while the body of the woman was discovered at Parseoni on Friday. IGMCH Dean Dr. Meenakshi Wahane arrested for demanding bribe

In a high profile catch, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday netted Dean of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Mayo Hospital for demanding bribe from a supplier of medicines. Dean Dr Meenakshi Gajbhiye (Wahane) had allegedly asked for gratification of Rs. 15,000 to clear the pending bill of Rs. 2.94 lakh. On Monday, sleuths of ACB laid a trap at IGGMC and Dr Wahane allegedly asked for bribe and later directed the complainant to hand over the money to canteen contractor. As soon as the mess contractor, Vijay Mishra (44), a resident of Babulkheda, accepted the bribe amount (the notes were marked with special ink) waiting ACB team pounced on him. Anti-social elements fired shots at the car of 29-year-old man, a follower of Asaram Bapu. The accused attempted to murder the man due to dispute regarding Asaram Bapu's Ashram, said Gittikhadan police.  According to police, victim Rahul Raju Joshi (29), a resident of Apsara Garment, Bharat Mata Square, Itwari is the follower of Asaram Bapu. Khaparkheda police have finally pieced together the sequence in the double murder of a woman and a youth. Accused Amarraj Meshram (27) on Monday admitted to the gory murder and narrated the incident to cops. The suspicion about cosy relations between Meshram's wife, Sonali and the youth, John proved to be the undoing for the two.  According to police, the case is pre-planned cold blooded murder. 33 KV line snapped seven times at Bhandewadi Dumping Yard

Power supply to 50,000 households under severe threat as the garbage transporting trucks have snapped SNDL’s 33 KV line seven times in a year. The 33 KV line passes through the Bhandewadi Dumping Yard where trucks are plying for unloading of garbage. A senior official of Spanco Nagpur Discom Ltd (SNDL) informed that same incident occurred on Saturday when the power line snapped after a truck hits the power line. An electric pole was partially uprooted after the incident, said the official.  The 33 KV line and the pole need complete replacement. This is the seventh such incident at same place within one year costing expenditure of Rs 70,000/- each time. The 33 kv line supply power to Chinteshwar and Medical Square sub-station (11 kv capacity) which are supplying power to more than 50,000 households. Beware walkers! 92 pedestrians killed in city in road accidents in 2016

Non usage of footpaths on part of citizens is proving to be dangerous for pedestrians who are proving to be sitting ducks for rash drivers. Statistics compiled by city police reveals a gloomy picture for walkers in second capital of State. From about 310 persons killed in road accident in year 2016, 92 fatalities involved pedestrians. Means, lives of 92 persons could have been saved had they been walking on the footpath. Or simply said, persons walking down the road are always prone to accidents as they are directly in the line of fire. While on police records these fatalities might be attributed to rash and reckless driving, but the fact is these pedestrians were walking on the carriageway. They had no right to be on the road meant for vehicles. That's why footpaths are constructed alongside carriageway to ensure walkers should not stray onto carriageway. CRPF installs busts of martyrs in schools

WITH an aim to spread awareness about martyrs, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is installing busts of martyrs of the force in their schools. A bust of Shaheed Devi Das was installed in Adarsh Saraswati Sadan High School on Friday. CBI traps RPF Inspector, constable at Nagbhid

Anti-Corruption Wing of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) trapped a Inspector of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and his writer for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 8,000 from a man who is accused in a Railway Act case. The trap was conducted at 4 pm when Inspector Unmeshkumar Charote and his writer constable Sunil Malkhede were at Nagbhid RPF station of South East Central Railway (SECR).  According to information, Arif Khan, a scrap dealer of Chandrapur is accused under Railway Act case for stealing railway property. “RPF seized an Over Head Wire (OHE) from house of Khan in November and offence was registered under Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1966,” said Divisional Security Commandant (SECR) Ramkumar Dubey.  Khan was frequently called to RPF station during course of investigation. Mystery shrouds over recovery of ‘head’ in Koradi area

Koradi police are in a fix following recovery of a head minus the body at a godown. The incident has triggered sensation in the area after a person out of curiosity peeked into the closed godown and found the head dangling from a rope. The cops are banking upon forensic experts to make headway in the case. At this stage it's not clear whether it is a case of suicide or that of murder, said the police. A man who had gone to attend the nature’s call near the godown noticed the head attached to an electric wire on Monday. In state of shock, the man fled from the spot and phoned the police. Staff of Koradi police station immediately rushed to the spot and removed the head.  The cops searched for the body of the man in nearby area. Two killed in road accidents at Yashodhara Nagar and Dighori area

Two persons died in separate mishaps under the jurisdiction of Yashodhara Nagar and Nandanvan Police Stations.  In first accident, unidentified vehicles knocked dead a pedestrian near Naka No. 2. According to police, Shekhar Vibhudatta Mishra (36), a resident of Plot No. 8/B, Shiv Nagar, Bhilgaon was walking on the road when the vehicle hits at 9.40 pm. Injured Mishra was admitted at hospital where he succumbed to the injuries. Delhi bizman lost Rs 20 lakh at Nagpur

A businessman lost Rs. 20 lakh after a third person turned-up and claimed the booty and vanished in thin air. “The man collected the cash from two different places and went missing with the cash,” said Ganeshpeth Police.  Complainant Mukesh Sohanlal Bhatia (45), a resident of Plot No. 1152, Vishwapuri, Ludhiana, Punjab, is into woolen business. He supplies woolen products across the India. More than 70 % woolen material in Tibetan market and other places comes through the businessman.  He arrived in the city on December 29 and collected the dues of woolen supplies. After collecting cash, he kept some cash with one Shantilal Kothari and Tipti Central Market near Baidyanath Square. RPF goes lenient in liquor seizure case at Nagpur Railway Station

Nagpur Division of Central Railway patting its back for intercepting foreign made liquor at Nagpur railway station let the culprit off the hook by invoking lenient clause of false declaration. In fact, RPF could have booked the firm that was transporting the liquor for carrying inflammable goods in the train that could have lead to prosecution. A railway official informed The Hitavada that Commercial Department and RPF have imposed fine worth Rs 1.10 lakh under Section 163 of Railway Act against the lease holder for false declaration of goods. The consignee simply mentioned that they are transporting some goods but in reality they were transporting costly liquor. This was a case of smuggling foreign liquor to evade payment of excise duty, the officer said. Murder on first day of new year rocks city

Year 2016 ended on a bloody note as city witnessed one more murder. The motive was quite petty and it seems liquor played the spoil sport. Police said, Kumar Wasudeo Haldar (28) attacked Akash Girad (26) with a sharp weapon. The incident occurred around 11.30 pm even as citizens were just starting countdown for ringing in new year. Haldar resides at Kalamna while Girad was resident of Shaniwari Cotton Market and two were gone to a restaurant. The two consumed liquor near Jayshree Talkies and during drinks one thing led to another and two lunged at each other's throat. Yashodara Nagar Police have arrested four persons in firing case. The accused have been produced in the court and the court ordered four days custody. The accused are identified as Mohd Ehfaz (20), Mohd Faizan alias Faizul (21), Firoz Khan alias Sonu (23) and Sheikh Shehjad alias Pappu, all are residents of Sangharsh Nagar, Mehbubpura.  According to police, the accused had gone to attend a programme at Sangharsh Nagar. Traffic cops books 527 offenders for drunken driving on new year

In the overnight drive during the new year, Traffic Control Branch booked 527 persons for drunken driving. The offenders were riding motorcycles after participating in new year revelry. A senior officer of Traffic Police informed that the drive was implemented extensively across the city with the use of 20 breath analysers. Maximum offenders were booked close to midnight hours as the drive was continued till early morning. Tribal Development Project Officer books in Scholorship scam

Hudkeshwar Police have booked Tribal Development Project Officer, Nagpur and President of Bhandara-based Dnyandeep Bahuddeshiya Shikshan Sanstha in scholorship scam. Both accused admitted a stundent -- Devram Maraskolhe -- in Vivekananda College by forging documents and grabbed his scholoroship worth Rs 22,000. When Maraskolhe learnt about the fraud, he approached the police and registered a complaint.  The accused are identified as Bharat Pokalwar, president of Dnyandeep Bahuddeshiya Shikshan Sanstha, which runs Vivekanand College and Giri Sarode (48), Tribal Development Project Officer, Nagpur.  A senior police officer informed that accused Pokalwar and Sarode shown admission of Deveram Maraskolhe, a resident of Sadak Arjuni village in Vivekananda college and grabbed yearly scholorship issued by the government. 5,000 cops to keep vigil on election day

Around 5,000 policemen along with three companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) are to be deployed for smooth conduct of elections of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Tuesday. Riot Control Police (RCP) squads, Quick Response Teams (QRT) are also going to remain on toes for responding to any challenge to law and order situation. About 54 polling stations out of total 2,783 polling stations have been stamped as the sensitive, informed Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar and Joint Commissioner of Police Shivajirao Bodkhe while addressing a joint press conference on Sunday.  The bandobast will be supervised by nine Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and 12 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) while 32 Police Inspectors (PI), 125 (APIs/PSIs) will lead the force in the field. Cops raids hookah parlour at Mate square

BAJAJ Nagar Police on Monday night raided an unauthorised hookah parlour at Layla Café Lounde, on third floor of Dominos outlet building, near Mate Square in Madhav Nagar, and caught its owner red-handed while providing tobacco products to minors. Cops seized hookah pots, tobacco packets without any statutory warning and other material; collectively worth Rs 60,500. Police arrested accused owner of the Layla Café Lounge Shyam Bhatia (49), a resident of New Colony, Sadar, in this connection. Acting on a tip off, a team of Bajaj Nagar Police led by senior Inspector Sudhir Nandanwar, raided Layla Café Lounge. During the raid, cops found as many as 26 youngsters, including minors, smoking hookah. The raiding team recorded their names of the youths who were found smoking hookah.  After conducting searches at the parlour, police seized hookah pots, tobacco packets and other material. Youth slaps girl in Koradi

Koradi police have booked a youth for allegedly slapping a girl on Saturday. According to police, an argument ensued between the girl and accused Sunil Nagjivan Tigga (20), a resident of Koradi, over some issues. The accused and girl resides in the same locality. During the argument, Tigga slapped the girl in full public view. The girl approached police station and lodged a complaint. Five-year-old boy died in road accident

A couple was seriously injured and their five-year-old son killed in road accident in Bhivapur Police Station area on Saturday. According to police, Anil Padole, a resident of Dhaparla Virkhande, his wife Sangita and son Anuj (5), were traveling on a motorcycle at 10.30 am. A car (MH-31/AH-1355) came from opposite direction in great speed and rammed into the motorcycle. Anil, Sangita and Anuj were dragged along the road with the car and sustained grievous injuries. The five-year-old Anuj succumbed to the injuries. Anil and Sangita were admitted at hospital. Bhivapur police have booked car driver -- Raman Shankar Naktode (41), a resident of Shriram Nagar. Truck hits Innova car on Kamaptee Road, IIM student killed

Two persons, including a student of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, died while five students of IIM and VNIT sustained grievous injuries after a speeding truck dashed their car at Automotive Square on early Sunday morning. “The youths were proceeding to Pench for picnic,” said an office of Jaripatka Police Station.  According to police, the youths were staying at the hostel in VNIT. A middle-aged man attempt to murder Dr. Vasant Khalatkar at Sakkardara square on Thursday afternoon. “Karishma Manjre, daughter of attacker Arun Manjre (55) was suffering from Dengue and died in the Dr. Khalatkar’s hospital during treatment six months ago. Death of Karishma left Arun dejected and angry as well.  He suspected Dr. Khalatkar responsible for the death and attacked him,” said A. T. Nerlekar, Senior Police Inspector of Sakkardara Police Station.  According to information, Manjre was hiding near the hospital. A woman murdered her husband by smashing his head with hammer at their residence in Adiwasi Society in jurisdiction of Sonegaon police station, on Saturday night. A quarrel broke out between the couple as the husband was suspecting fidelity of wife. The woman was reportedly in inebriated condition when she attacked the husband when he retired for night. According to Sonegaon Police, Gulabsingh Madavi (46), his wife Rani (44) were living at rented premises of Jagdish Golait at Plot No. 47, Adiwasi Society, Narendra Nagar. Notorious goon of North Nagpur, Little Sardar, was shot at his office at Ashok Square in Pachpaoli Police Station area on Sunday night.
