It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. A middle-aged man attempt to murder Dr. Vasant Khalatkar at Sakkardara square on Thursday afternoon. “Karishma Manjre, daughter of attacker Arun Manjre (55) was suffering from Dengue and died in the Dr. Khalatkar’s hospital during treatment six months ago. Death of Karishma left Arun dejected and angry as well.
He suspected Dr. Khalatkar responsible for the death and attacked him,” said A. T. Nerlekar, Senior Police Inspector of Sakkardara Police Station. According to information, Manjre was hiding near the hospital. When the arrived near his car, Manjre came behind and hit an iron rod on his head. He also took out a spear to attack the doctor. However, the doctor’s driver overpowered Manjre. Within a minute, onlookers gathered at the spot and caught hold of Manjre. Staff of Sakkardara Police Station arrived at the spot and took furious Manjre to police station.
The cops have booked Manjre under Section 307 of Indian Penal Code. PI Nerlekar further informed that Manjre was upset after the death of his daughter. Manjre is cloth trader by profession and has two sons. Karishma was his only daughter. Sakkardara Vyapari Sangh President Narendra Satija condemned the attack on Dr. Khalatkar.
