Major reshuffle expected in Maharashtra Police leadership

The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Other notable contenders include Thane CP Jaijeet Singh, DG ATS Sadanand Date, DG Police Housing Sandeep Bishnoi, DG Railway Pradnya Sarvade, Additional Director of NIA Atulchandra Kulkarni, and DG State Security Corporation Bipin Kumar Singh, he said. City Police’s Zone-IV: Highest detection rate in city, gory crime decreased, thefts are on rise

By Dheeraj Fartode Zone - IV of Nagpur Police Commissionerate covers Imambada, Ajni, Sakkardara, Nandanvan and Hudkeshwar Police Stations. The Zone is notorious for body offences but still crime decreased in the Zone with 5.01 per cent while detection rate increased by three per cent in year 2016 which is  maximum among all five Zones of Nagpur Police Commissionerate. Excluding thefts, hurts and molestation, the Zone showed decreasing trend in all important heads of Indian Penal Code (IPC).  DCP Ravindrasingh Pardeshi According to the statistics, the Zone recorded 1,931 crime cases in year 2016 as against 2,033 cases in year 2015 and 1,749 in year 2014. The Zone have detected 1,304 cases with detection rate of 68 per cent in year 2016. Detection rate of the Zone was 65 per cent in year 2015 and 56.66 per cent in year 2014. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ishu Sindhu was the in-charge of Zone till June 2016 and later G Shreedhar was the top cop of the Zone.

City police Zone-III: Massive surge in cases of murders and hurt with overall crime, 5% increase in detection rate

By Dheeraj Fartode Zone-III of Nagpur Police Commissionerate covers Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli and Shanti Nagar Police Stations. This is the only Zone where surge in crime cases recorded in the commissionerate. Overall crime increased in the zone by 2.32 per cent while detection rate increased by DCP Sambhaji Kadam 5 per cent. The Zone have also recorded massive 18 per cent drop in preventive action in year 2016. This Zone in particular is known for dense population and perhaps also reason for high crime rate as this is also the major business hub of city. As per the statistics, the Zone have recorded 1,810 crime cases in year 2016 as against 1,768 cases in year 2015 and 1,617 in year 2014. The Zone has detected 1,132 cases with detection rate of 63 per cent in year 2016. City Police’s Zone-II: Crime rate down and detection up but dacoities doubled

By Dheeraj Fartode Zone - II of Nagpur Police Commissionerate covers Sitabuldi, Ambazari, Sadar, Gittikhadan, Dhantoli and Mankapur Police Stations. The Zone has recorded decrease in crime by 4.27 per cent due to extensive preventive action and marginal 3.82 per cent increase in detection rate, which is less than Nagpur DCP Rakesh Kalasagar, IPS Police Commissionerate overall rate. Substantial increase in attempt to murder, hurt and dacoity would be main concern for the Zonal officials.   As per the statistics, the Zone has recorded 2,241 crime cases in year 2016 as against 2,341 cases in year 2015 and 2,218 in year 2014. The Zone has detected 1,288 cases with detection rate of 57.47 per cent in year 2016. Detection rate of the Zone was 53.65 per cent in year 2015 and 52.16 per cent in year 2014. City police's Zone - I records surge in body offences, robberies and vehicle thefts

By Dheeraj Fartode Zone - I of Nagpur Police Commissionerate covers Sonegaon, MIDC, Hingna, Pratap Nagar, Bajaj and Wadi Police Stations. The Zone is showing decreasing trend of crime by 7.07% and 12.66% increase in detection rate, which is more than Nagpur Police Commissionerate. However, the Zonal officials need to  DCP Dipali Masirkar, IPS curb the surge in body offences, robberies and vehicle thefts  and also ensure that preventive action are taken in uniform manner across the jurisdiction.  Crime statistics of  the Zone shows that the Zone has recorded 1,575 crime cases in year 2016 as against 1,695 cases in year 2015 and 2014. The Zone has detected 1,044 cases with detection rate of 66.28% in year 2016 while detection rate of the Zone was 53.62% in year 2015 and 54.04% in year 2014. Crime rate drops in Nagpur, detection rate zooms to 64%

While the crime graph in city is on decline, detection rate of Nagpur Police is on the upswing. Achieving 64 per cent detection rate, Nagpur Police solved 6,215 cases of 9,720 registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) during the year 2016. Statistics compiled by city police indicates to decrease of 3.11 per cent in overall crime while detection rate records a jump of 4 per cent. This indicates a slight improvement in investigation and deterrence of police force.  Glancing through the record sheet, it appears that serious crimes, viz. murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and cheating cases, have increased in the city while chain snatching, robberies, burglaries and rape cases are on the decline. Girl raped at MLA Hostel

In a shocking incident, a teenage girl was allegedly raped by two persons, including her boyfriend at MLA Hostel over a period of four days. Gittikhadan police have arrested the accused and obtained four days police custody. The accused have been identified as -- Rajat Bhadre (19), a resident of Nelson Square, and Manoj Bhagat (44), a resident of Gittikhadan. Woman hires ‘Supari killers’ to revenge insult

Sensation prevailed in Pawanshakti Nagar of Nandanvan Police Station when a semi-decomposed body of a criminal recovered from a well. Deceased Likesh Vijay Sathawne (27) was stabbed several times and his head was smashed with boulders by the three ‘supari killers’ hired by a woman to revenge insult. Likesh was missing since April 9, said police.  The accused have been identified as Gopal alias Guddu Bisen, Gopal alias Guddu Bisen and Prafulla Gedam. The cop also searching for a woman -- Jaya Sharma -- who had hired the accused for the murder. NMRCL damages power cables of MSEDCL

In yet another instance, an underground power cable got damaged in Dharampeth area of city on Monday. The culprit this time was contractor of Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL). The East-West corridor of Nagpur Metro is passing through North Ambazari Road where drilling work is on for undertaking construction of pillars. A JCB engaged by the contractor hit the 11 KV power cable disrupting power supply of Bhagwaghar feeder. More than 2,000 households of Ramdaspeth, Kachipura and VIP road area were plunged in darkness. And the time was around 1 am. It was torturous time for the people as this dastardly hour there was no way to know as to when the power would be back and what caused the power failure. Power cable damages put citizens to inconvenience

Since Wednesday, ongoing development works in city continue to spell trouble for power utilities as JCB hit the underground cable interrupting power supply during summer scorch for hours. Several areas of city went without power since Wednesday due to damage done to underground cables.  According to information, a 33 KV underground cable that passes through the Gorewada area of Umred road was damaged at 10.45 am while digging a pit for cement road. After the incident, power supply to Bhupesh Nagar, Girija Palace, Kamruddin lay-out, MHADA colony, Utkarsh Nagar, Ganga Nagar, Virchakra colony, Narmada colony, Jagdish Nagar, Ekta Nagar got disrupted. Couple attacks traffic constable at Indora square

Jaripatka police have booked a couple for attacking and threatening an on-duty traffic police constable at Indora square on Wednesday afternoon. However, the couple alleged that the constable behaved indecently with them and assaulted them. Taking cognizance of the incident, Commissioner of Police Dr. K. Venkatesham ordered inquiry in the case. According to police version, on-duty police constable Babusingh Shobharam Kachhwah stopped a couple for not wearing helmet at 1 pm. When the constable asked for documents of the motorcycle, the couple had shown RC book and motor riding license. Soon after the constable took out Challan book and was writing a Challan for not wearing helmet. The couple suddenly picked up quarrel with the constable and abused the constable. Conman poses as Police Inspector, extort money from Batukbhai Jewelers, held

Sitabuldi police booked a man for posing as a police inspector from Mumbai Crime Branch and threatening and extorting money from proprietor of Batukbahi jeweler Nagpur.  The accused has been identified as Nishant Parmar (32), a resident of Shanti Nagar, Dahisar, Mumbai. According to information, complainant in the case -- proprietor of Batukbhai jewelers Bharat Jamchand Seth (53), a resident of Flat No. 403, Heritage Apartment, Civil Lines -- received a phone call on March 22. The caller (Parmar) introduced himself as Police Inspector Rathod attached to Mumbai Crime Branch. During conversation, PI Rathod accused Bharat of purchasing stolen valuables from a woman thief. “A woman has been arrested by Mumbai Crime Branch and she had given a statement that she had sold the stolen valuables in Batukbhai Jewelers, Nagpur,” PI Rathod told Bharat on phone.  The Inspector later asked the jeweler to hand over Rs 2.5 lakh as the recovery value of the said stolen jewelry or else he w

Power employees to go on mass casual leave

Employees of MSEDCL, MSETCL and MahaGenco will be on “mass casual leave” on April 12 for demand of pension, Maharashtra State Electricity Workers Federation announced on Monday.  The power employees protested many times for the demand and Government had also taken a decision in cabinet meeting in year 2008, however, the decision was not implement since last eight years. Office-bearers of the federation met minister for energy Chandrashekhar Bawankule and minister for finance Sudhir Mungantiwar during winter session and submitted a memorandum. A committee was formed on December 19, 2015 and Director Anurag Bhatiya is heading the committee since last 14 months. As the committee has not taken any decision, the federation has decided to call for mass causal leave strike. Mohan Sharma of Workers Federation has given notice of strike to the companies. 

Whimsical neighbour kills three-year-old boy

A three-year-old boy was murdered by neighbour at Takalghat village in MIDC Buttibori Police Station area on Friday. The police have arrested accused -- Vichet Sambhaji Waghmare (20). “The accused have whimsical personality and committed the crime in the fit of rage when the boy was playing in the courtyard,” said Police Inspector MIDC Buttibori Santosh Wairagade.  The victim was identified as Atharva Amardip Shrirame. His father Amardip hails from Minzari village in Chimur tehsil of Chandrapur district. Amardip, his wife Shashikala along with two sons living  at Takalghat area since two years. A girl candidate thought of a novel way to pass the police recruitment process of Government Railway Police (GRP)! Boy falls Into Borewell, rescued

A 19-MONTH-OLD boy, who had fallen into an open borewell in Ekta Nagar slums, Bhandewadi in Kalamna, was rescued by police with the assistance of local residents on Thursday evening. Around 6.45 pm, the boy, Prathamesh Deepak Gajbhiye, a resident of Ekta Nagar, slipped at a depth of 15 feet inside the borewell while playing near it. Some residents noticed the incident and raised an alarm. Some residents made futile efforts to pull the boy out. An alert resident informed Police Control Room about the incident. Three Beat Marshals of Kalamna Police Station, who were patrolling the streets, rushed to the spot after receiving information on their walkie talkies. The Beat Marshals dispersed the crowd gathered near the borewell. HC allows appeal of accused in sensational Mohd. Irshad murder case

The Division Bench of the Bombay High Court-Nagpur on Friday pronounced the Judgment in the sensational murder case of Mohd. Irshad and allows appeal of accused in the case.  Mohd. Irshad and Mohd. Ejaz were attacked in Akola town in July 2012. Mohd. Irshad was succumbed to the injuries as he was inflicted with 43 lethal injuries.  On the basis of complaint lodged by the Mohd. Ejaz, Mohd. Munaf, his real brother and cousins were arrayed as accused.  The four arrested accused were put to trail and two more accused also surrendered after some time and they were also tried in the same trial.  The complainant side was represented by the battery of lawyers from Akola including Adv. Navrangabadi, besides the public prosecutor Vinod Fate. The prosecution examined several witnesses including four alleged eye-witnesses who all supported the prosecution and named all the accused and identified the accused before the Court. DGP Satish Mathur's instructions on general transfer remains on paper; misses deadline

Police establishment though quick to promulgate orders about framing time bound programme for deciding on transfers within the force, however the same police bosses of Maharashtra Police seem to have forgotten about the power vested with them. To date the meeting of Police Establishment Board No. 2 that has Director General of Police (DGP) Satish Mathur as its Chairman was not been held and hence question mark hangs on general transfers of officers including that of Sub-Inspector, Assistant Police Inspector and Police Inspector. DGP Satish Mathur It was DGP Mathur who issued a circular on January 20, 2017, about General Transfers (GT) for Police Establishment No. 2. Unit Commanders were directed to gather transfer requests in February and send to DGP by April 3, 2017. DGP office reserved entire April for inspection of request letters and was to conduct meetings of PEB 2 between April 1 to 7 and transfer orders were to be issued thereafter.  However, DGP Mathur has failed
