Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. Since Wednesday, ongoing development works in city continue to spell trouble for power utilities as JCB hit the underground cable interrupting power supply during summer scorch for hours. Several areas of city went without power since Wednesday due to damage done to underground cables.
According to information, a 33 KV underground cable that passes through the Gorewada area of Umred road was damaged at 10.45 am while digging a pit for cement road. After the incident, power supply to Bhupesh Nagar, Girija Palace, Kamruddin lay-out, MHADA colony, Utkarsh Nagar, Ganga Nagar, Virchakra colony, Narmada colony, Jagdish Nagar, Ekta Nagar got disrupted. More than 7,000 households went without power supply for two hours.
In another incident, power cable in Sutgirni area of Umred Road was broken by a JCB operator. On Wednesday night, two such incidents were reported in the city. A JCB operator hit the underground power cables in Binkar Nagar of Hudkeshwar area. The power supply was restored after tremendous hard-work by SNDL team.
Despite repeated request from the power franchise, the negligent JCB operators are breaking underground power cables repeatedly. In a month, more than 10 such incidents were reported in city.
In another incident, an unknown person set afire huge amount of trash just below a transformer located at Venu Corner, Balaji Nagar, Manewada. The fire caused severe damage to the underground incoming supply cable of the transformer and disrupted the supply to the transformer itself besides causing severe damage to the allied infrastructure. This caused outage to the 100-odd households for several hours. SNDL has requested public not to dump or burn waste near electrical equipments.
