Major reshuffle expected in Maharashtra Police leadership

The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Tight security of 7,000 cops for Winter Session of State legislature

Around 7,000 police personnel will be deployed for security of Winter Session of State Legislature slated to begin here from Monday. The security arrangements are being monitored by Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar and Joint CP Aswati Dorje. Director General of Police (DGP) Rajnish Seth would review the bandobast plan likely on Sunday. The police are geared up to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the Session. Cop on-duty killed as car goes berserk, ran over seven

A speeding car went berserk and ran over half a dozen men including an on-duty policeman who was inspecting an accident spot at Naya Kund in Parseoni police station area. The cop was killed and seven persons injured in the horrifying accident reported on Wednesday night, police said. The deceased cop was identified as Jayant Vishnu Sherekar (42), a resident of Ranala, Kamptee. He was attached to Paresoni police station. According to police, first accident occurred near Naya Kund between Amdi turning and Paresoni at around 8.30 pm. A recklessly driven truck rammed into a car coming from the opposite direction. Spurned lover set girlfriend’s shop afire

A married man set a mini truck and a vegetable shop of his girlfriend’s father afire after she turned down his marriage proposal. The incident took place at Waghoda village in the limits of Saoner police, police said. The accused was identified as Gani alias Palash Wasnik, a resident of Rambagh, Saoner. He was working in a barber’s shop. According to police, the man was in relationship with Sonali (name changed) for the past seven to eight months. Palash’s wife recently left the house when she learnt about his affair. Sonali decided to live with Palash and came to his house with a bag. When she went back home to get another bag, her mother realised something amiss and questioned her. She counseled Sonali and diverted her attention from Palash. As a result, Sonali refused to marry Palash, police said.  Angry over Sonali’s decision, Palash went to the vegetable shop of Sonali’s father at 1 am. Teenager mows down by school bus

A 13-year-old student of Marie Poussepin's Academy was crushed to death by a recklessly driven school bus near the school located in the Mhasala area of Koradi police station on Tuesday afternoon. Just after leaving the school campus, the bus hit two motorcycles coming from the opposite direction and rammed the vehicle into a school van. Students who were boarding the van got trapped under the wheels of the bus. The uncontrolled bus moved on hitting the vehicles and stalled only after hitting an electric pole. The heart-wrenching incident created panic and chaos in the Mhasala area. The parents of the deceased student were crying inconsolably in the hospital after seeing the body of their child, a police official said.  The deceased was identified as Samyak Dinesh Kalambe (13), a resident of Barakholi Indora. Nagpur rural police bust fake tobacco manufacturing unit

A fake tobacco manufacturing unit was busted and three persons were arrested for making duplicate zarda products at Weltur near Saoner. The raiding party seized 347 kgs of raw tobacco worth Rs 16.22 lakh during the action, officials said. The police also seized empty tin boxes of tobacco, packing machine, empty tobacco pouch, weighing machine, electric stamp machine and other material. The racket was operated by Durgesh Vijay Agrawal (31), a resident of Old Mankapur. He went absconding after the police action, the official said. Acting on a tip-off, the police team raided the unit in a farm owned by one Shivaji Vath. The cops noticed labourers packing bogus tobacco in original tin boxes and a particular company. Investigation revealed that Agrawal was purchasing the empty tin boxes of the scented tobacco company from Paan Shops and filling the raw tobacco in it. Ragging row : Offence registered against 6 MBBS interns of GMC&H

Ajni police on Friday registered an offence against six interns of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Nagpur for ragging a junior, said a police official.   The accused students have been identified as Dr Om Vaidya, Dr Shivprasad Kute, Dr Shriganesh Nilwan, Dr Piyush Neharkar, Dr Sachin Bhosle   and Dr Bhagat Shubham Mahajan. Sr. Police Inspector Nitin Phatangare informed ‘The Hitavada that the offence was registered on the complaint of Dr Akhil Bhagwan Giradkar on behalf of GMC&H administration. The interns are booked under Section 4 of Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act and Sections 323, 504, 506, 143, 147 and 149 of Indian Penal Code. Prison guards charge Rs 5,000 for Ganja in Central Jail

FIVE persons, including two prison constables, were arrested by the City Police for supplying Ganja (Marijuna) to the inmates of Central Jail, on Wednesday. The prison staffers were charging Rs 5,000/- for delivery of Ganja to the inmates and using WhatsApp messenger to convey demands of the inmates to their accomplices living in the city, police officials said. The arrested accused have been identified as Shrikant Thorat, Gopal Parate, Rahul Mendhekar, Prison constables Ajinkya Rathod and Prashant Rathod. Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar told that Shrikant, Gopal and Rahul were history-sheeters. They were in the jail for around six months and developed friendship with notorious goons Nished Wasnik and Vaibhav Tandekar, who are behind the bars. Six interns of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Nagpur were barred from internship after they allegedly found ragging a junior student. The students also asked to vacate the college hospital, officials said. An official of GMC&H said that the six MBBS students are undergoing internships at the college. They ragged a first year MBBS student in April this year  who secretly filmed a video of the incident and mailed the complaint to the Central Anti-Ragging Committee. The Committee immediately directed the GMC&H administration to initiate action against the students. Dean of GMC&H Dr Raj Gajbhiye issued orders suspending internship of the students and also directed them to vacate the college hostel. Police to survey population of stray dogs in city

Acting on the directives of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, Commissioner of Police (CPAmitesh Kumar has directed all police stations to survey the population of stray dogs in their jurisdictions. In an order, the CP directed the police personnel to compile a data of complaints received at police stations against stray dogs. The police station staff will also visit the spots where the stray dogs are creating nuisance and count their population, the CP’s order stated. The police will also share the data with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the monitoring committee so that the citizens would get rid of nuisance creating stray dogs. The CP also tasked policemen to check whether complaints from Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) about stray dogs are received or not at police stations. HC slams DIG prison for passing stereotyped orders while rejecting furlough applications

Highlighting importance of furlough, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court said that furlough is necessary to avoid ill-effects of continuous prison life. The Court also slammed on Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prison, Nagpur for passing stereotyped orders while rejecting furlough applications and ordered concerned officer to pay the costs of the writ petition with High Court Legal Services Sub-Committee, Nagpur. “It is the duty of the DIG Prison to exercise his power and discharge his duties by carefully considering all relevant facts and circumstances and the applicable Rules,” the Division bench of Justice Sunil Shukre and Justice M W Chandwani stated in the order, while allowing furlough application of convict Mohd Sagir Bashir Chauhan (60), Presently at Central Prison, Amravati.
