The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Around 5,000 policemen along with three companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) are to be deployed for smooth conduct of elections of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Tuesday. Riot Control Police (RCP) squads, Quick Response Teams (QRT) are also going to remain on toes for responding to any challenge to law and order situation. About 54 polling stations out of total 2,783 polling stations have been stamped as the sensitive, informed Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar and Joint Commissioner of Police Shivajirao Bodkhe while addressing a joint press conference on Sunday.
The bandobast will be supervised by nine Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and 12 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) while 32 Police Inspectors (PI), 125 (APIs/PSIs) will lead the force in the field. The cops will also take help of 1,500 Home Guards during the bandobast.
Elaborating on bandobast plans further, the Joint CP informed that 10 platoons of SRPF will be kept in reserve and they are designated as striking force. These platoons will move in special vehicles immediately in case of any eventuality. About 12 armed PSIs along with 96 armed policemen will be deployed at fix pickets in the sensitive areas. Four RCP squads, one company and one platoon for SRPF will also remain ready at police control room. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Ravindrasingh Pardeshi were also present in the press conference.
The cops have registered 300 cases under Prohibition Act for against persons who were caught carrying liquor illegally and 74 men have been arrested under Arms act. In preventive action, the cops have booked about 1,512 persons under CrPC and 96 others under BP Act. 139 from sensitive areas of city so far.
