Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Members of various organisation on Saturday participated in Bahujan Kranti Morcha to press their demands including effective implementation of Atrocity Act, Mandal, Sachar and Nachhipan Commission recommendations.
The march started from Reshimbag square at afternoon hours and reached Samvidhan square at 5 pm after passing through Ashok square, Baidyanath square, Aanand talkies square, Zanshi Rani square.
A dais was set up at Reshimbag ground where representatives of various organisations addressed the gathering. The gathering is collective efforts of SC, ST, OBC and other organisations. The representatives demanded that the government should make Atrocity Act more stranger.
Waman Meshram, President of BAMCEF said that the state government approved separate ministry for OBCs however, the ministry would work under the Chief Minister. “The state government should appoint OBC person to head the ministry,” demands Meshram. He further alleged that the government is trying to cancel the Atrocity Act. The morcha started at 3 pm from Reshimbagh ground and reached Samvidhan square 5 pm. Women participants were walking ahead followed by the youth and men. The morcha witnessed sizable number of women participation. The participants were carrying blue, yellow, green, saffron and white flags during the march. After reaching Samvidhan square, a delegation submitted a memorandum.
Prof. Naresh Patil, Ramesh Pise, Rajkumar Thorat, Smita Kamble, Yeshwant Telang, Bhente Surei Sasai, Sushma Fad, Prof. Baban Taywade, Shridhar Salve, Mohd. Ajbuddin, Dr. Sunil Pendam, Archana Bhoyar, Narayan Bagde and others were prominently present in the march.
Waman Meshram, National President of BAMCEF said that 36 Bahujan Kranti Morchas are planned across the state from October 24, 2016 to January 21, 2017.
A mega morcha is scheduled on January 21 at Mumbai in which people from Nashik and Pune will also join. Disclosing his further plans, Meshram informed that rallies would be organised at all talukas of 32 districts in second phase and the movement will spread in 44,000 villages of Maharashtra in third phase. Meshram made it clear that there was no role of political parties in the ongoing rallies. “It is a mass movement fighting for rights of all the communities,” said Meshram.
