It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. Two persons, including a student of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, died while five students of IIM and VNIT sustained grievous injuries after a speeding truck dashed their car at Automotive Square on early Sunday morning. “The youths were proceeding to Pench for picnic,” said an office of Jaripatka Police Station.
According to police, the youths were staying at the hostel in VNIT. On Saturday, the youngsters planned a visit Pench on Sunday. They booked a Innova car.
Driver Nitesh Ramteke, a resident of Seminary Hills picked the students from VNIT Hostel at 4 am along. They were travelling in Innova car (MH-40/A-2244) and while crossing Automotive square, a speeding truck (GJ-05/BX-1822) that came from Kalamna rammed into the car. The truck then collided with a Mahindra Jeep (MH-49/B-4973). As the truck was in great speed, both Innova and Mahindra Jeep got overturned after the dash.
Durgesh Chavan (26), the IIM student and resident of Delhi and driver Ramteke sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot. Injured students are identified as Navnit Kaur, a resident of Bhuvbaneshwar; Mayank Pradhan (21), a resident of Nagpur; Sahil Jain (23), a resident of Haryana; Abhishek Das (25), a resident of Hyderabad and Karim Mirza Ashraf Ali Baig (25).
Control Room of City Police informed Jaripatka Police Station and the staff rushed to the spot. The injured persons were admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile, the accused truck driver managed to flee spot leaving the truck on the spot as front wheel of the truck leave apart.
Ashfak Ahmed (35), Sheikh Ahmed and Abid Sheikh who were travelling in the Mahindra jeep were also injured.
The cops have registered the case under Sections 279, 3304 (a), 337, 338, 427 of Indian Penal Code read with sub-sections 134 and 177 of Motor Vehicle Act. Further investigatin is on.
