The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Director General of Maharasthara Police (DGP) Satish Mathur on Tuesday assured smooth conduct of the upcoming Zilla Parishad and Gram Panchayat election in Naxal affected Gadchiroli district. “Anyone found warning villagers to boycott elections will face police action,” warned DGP Mathur after touring Gadchiroli district.

Interacting with reporters at the office of Commissioner of Police, the state police chief said, preparations for the election in the state is in final phase and a special meeting of senior officers would be called on February 10 to discuss strategy.
In a move to send tough message to senior police officers for not joining duties in Vidarbha, the DGP informed that departmental action has been initiated against Inspector General Sharad Shelar for joining duties at Nagpur.
When asked about High Court’s stern comment against Nagpur Police for registering offence against Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) after the India-England match for refusal of VCA to give 500 free passes, Mathur said that they are bound to honour the decision of court and follow its orders. On the issue of investigation in Dabba trading scam, the DGP informed that the matter is under consideration of the Supreme Court.
The DGP also warned rumour mongers who often press the panic button and asked such mischievous elements not to indulge in such undesirable activities. “The psycho attacker will definitely be arrested,” promised the DGP. Commissioner of Police Dr. K. Venkatesham, DCP (Detection) Ranjan Kumar Sharma were present in the press conference.
