Now ASL to be conducted by team of Mumbai's SPU
By Dheeraj Fartode
The Advance Security Liaison (ASL) for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visits throughout the State would henceforth be handled by his personal security team of Special Protection Unit. This new norms would be applicable even for visits Fadnavis undertake outside the State, but within the country. This new practice was put in place to bring about uniformity in practices of advance survey which are customarily used to be carried out by respective district SPUs units along with respective local police teams.
Means now a team from SPU's Mumbai unit would undertake the advance location survey whenever CM is to visit outside the capital city. The visiting team would dictate the terms to local units henceforth, in simple terms. The new practice has been put in place as security survey in aftermath of many slip-ups wherein CM got mobbed or strangers got very close to his inner security circle caused alarms within the establishment prompting redrawing of the framework.
Security measures provided to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are being streamlined throughout the State to have uniform practices, stated Special Inspector General of Police (VIP Security) Krishna Prakash. He is the in-charge of CM's security.
The process of assessment of threats and securing the sites where Chief Minister visits would now be done as per the new standards framed by IGP Prakash. The highlight of the new measures being dictated to units outside Mumbai is to ensure that CM's security should not be breached. Now onwards the officers and men from Mumbai SPU would conduct advance survey and brief the local police on security measures to be adopted and also vet the security deployment plan drawn-up by local police.
Prakash while talking to The Hitavada that senior officials of SPU attached to CM security noticed lapses in ASL conducted by the local units. CM’s movement was being taken lightly since he was touring the State quite often compared to earlier times. Hence more often than not curious people were able to breach the CM's security causing embarrassment and at times it was a close shave. Hence it was decided to have a proper way of conducting ASL.
The IGP has streamlined the process and assigned special team of Mumbai SPU to conduct ASL at every place where CM visit is planned. Two officers including a Police Inspector (PI) are visiting during CM’s tour within the State while a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) rank official goes for conducting ASL during the tours outside the State, it is learnt.
However, IGP Prakash denied any specific threat behind the new security measure and said that this is just a routine practice of some minor corrections in procedures.
On the lines of SPG...
The new ASL protocol being put in place for CM's public visit it seems are modelled on the lines of Special Protection Group (SPG), they are the most professional security set-up in the country. SPG teams visit in advance to places where Prime Minister is to tour and held parleys with local SPUs and city police machinery.
