Efforts to reopen the controversial Dabo Club, which was shut down for 45 days following the murder of two young men, have triggered strong anger and fear among the families of the victims.
The incident took place in the early hours of December 26 last year during a Christmas party at Dabo Club. Pranav Ranavare (27) was allegedly killed after a minor dispute. His friend, Gaurav Karda (34), was badly injured in the same incident and later died during treatment.
The Sonegaon police arrested six accused - Soumya Deshmukh, Mehul alias Monu Rahate, Rajiv Chawla, Abhay Jhamtani, Gappu Sharma and Tushar Nankani. All the accused are currently lodged in jail.
The club is owned by Directors Devyani Vijay Wadettiwar, Karan Vikram Thakkar and Mohd Hamza Rayeen. It may be mentioned here that Dabo Club has a long history of complaints related to harassment and assaults. Police sources said repeated warnings were ignored by the management. During the investigation, it was found that the club had installed very few CCTV cameras, allegedly to hide activities inside. More than 150 people were allowed entry to the Christmas party without age verification, and many of them were minors. The club was also operating beyond its permitted capacity. In the last three years, seven to eight incidents of violence and harassment were reported, but several incidents were allegedly not officially reported to avoid police action.
Following these violations, DCP Zone I Rishikesh Singa Reddy ordered the closure of Dabo Club for 45 days on December 27 under Section 163(2) of the BNSS. However, only 20 days into the closure, attempts to reopen the club have reportedly begun.
“We are shocked that after such a brutal crime, efforts are being made to restart the same place,” said relatives of the decesed persons.
DCP Rishikesh Singa Reddy told The Hitavada said, “An application to restart the club has been received from the club management on Saturday. However, no decision has been taken so far.”
