A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

  Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Quality Education for all is my motto: Devendra Fadnavis

Asserting that education decides future of country, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday asked institutes to focus on delivering quality education. “Education is an important measure of progress. It shapes generation and decides destiny of the country by providing quality education, enhancing skills and inculcating good values in students,” Fadnavis opined. 

Instead of earlier concept -- ‘Education for all’-- the Government will work hard to ensure ‘Quality education for all’. Every school should follow the path of excellence as only book-based education and formal degrees are insufficient in knowledge based economy and ever changing world in 21st century. Educational institutes should adopt curriculum which hons soft skills of studetents, the Chief Minister said. 

He was adressing a programme at Royal Gondawana Public School, Shankarpur, after inaugurating Late Meeradevi Dasture Memorial. Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, MLA Sudhakar Kohale, Zilla Parishad President Nisha Sawarkar, ZP Member Ruprao Shingne, Chairman of the school Dinanath Dasture, Deven Dasture, Dr Mrinalini Dasture, Satyajeet Dasture and others were present on the dias.

Country needs a knowledge-based society for better future. A school that imparts value education system has potential to transform one’s life, Fadnavis pointed out. Outlining his future plans, Chief Minister said Government will set up prestigious educational institutes like AIIMS, IIT, IIM in the region in near future. Also, there are plans to tap mineral wealth worth Rs 5 lakh crore in Vidarbha region. He further praised Late Meeradevi for her vision and opening doors of education at backward area. 

Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said that Dasture family had toiled hard for success of the institute. The family had launched the school when there was no proper roads and power supply at the area. He further appealed Dasture family to develop school into technology college. 

Deven Dasture in his introductory remark said that the school has completed 10 years of existence and sensitized students with Indian culture and ethos. Recalling mother Meeradevi’s contribution for the school, Dasture said that she was visionary woman and her lion’s share is the school’s success. Aarti Choubey compared the program.

“Everyone has hidden talent and you will have to discover it. Instead of following anyone, try to become what you are.” With these words Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inspired students while interacting with them. Elated at meeting the young and dynamic Chief Minister, the students also asked a volley of questions and were visibly impressed by articulation, in-depeth knowledge and clarity of thought displayed by Fadnavis.

DCP (crime) Sunil Kolhe By Dheeraj Fartode About 28 State Police Service (SPS) officers were granted  Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre on Monday. At Nagpur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Crime) Sunil Kolhe is among these officers.
