It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. RISING consumption of drugs by youth of Nagpur has sounded alarm bells in the police department. Alarmed by the menace threatening to ruin young lives, Nagpur Police have planned a severe crackdown on illicit trade and consumption of drugs. After raiding 86 premises across the city and seizing drugs worth Rs 20 lakh in a single day, cops are now preparing the list of clientele of the drug traffickers. “Once the list is prepared, these ‘customers’ will face action under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,” informed Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar, on Tuesday, while talking to media. It may be mentioned that the police, on Monday, carried out a massive drive against drug peddlers by raiding 86 premises across the city in which a total of 130 gm Mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 13 lakh, 133 gm of Charas worth Rs. 7.8 lakh and 2.5 kg Ganja worth Rs. 37,500/- were seized.
