City Police to form CIU squads for continuous monitoring of criminals

WITH an aim to get actionable inputs about active criminals, Nagpur Police has decided to form Criminal Intelligence Units (CIU) at all police stations that will continuously follow the criminals to pin them down before committing crime.
The idea of new unit is the brainchild of Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay. The CP has issued directives to senior rank officials for identifying police personnel with skills of gathering Intelligence inputs.

Explaining the concept, Dr. Upadhyay informed ‘The Hitavada’ that Detection Branch (DB) at police stations and Crime Branch are special units mainly tasked for investigation of crime cases. The cops are also regularly checking criminals by visiting their places. “In spite of regular checking by DB squad or Crime Branch, the criminals are committing crime. This is a matter of grave concern. Hence, we felt the need of a Special Unit that will gather actionable inputs about the criminals. The inputs will be further analysed for pro-active action,” Dr. Upadhyay said.

Two Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) rank officers and six policemen would be selected for CIU from every police station. A PSI and three policemen would be available in one shift of 12 hours. Basic job of the new squad will be to track the criminals, their activities, daily routine, earning sources, contacts with friends and rivals. After gathering these details, the squad will carry out analysis of the criminal and report in-charge of Police Station after finding anything suspicious. The Police Station in-charge will take the call for action against the criminals.
The Police Commissioner said that around 500 criminals are living in the city and the CIU squad will continuously monitor their activities.
Experts on the issue stated that the squad could generate important inputs for the police force for pro-active policing. If such analysis of every criminal is carried out, the police can preempt next action by the criminals. If police get the inputs that the criminal was hatching conspiracy against his rival, then police can immediately act on the inputs and stop the criminal from committing crime. “Such continuos monitoring would help the police to bring down graph of crime in the Second Capital,” an expert said.

The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
