A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

Murder accused consumed toilet cleaner at Umred police station

An accused arrested in the murder case of his paramour attempted to committ suicide at Umred Police Station by consuming toilet cleaner. Jitesh Waman Kumbhre (24), was admitted at the hospital and his condition is reportedly normal.
A police official said that Kumbhre, a resident Mangli (Arab) village in Nagbhir teshil of Chandrapur district, was arrested for killing Aishwarya Sunil Chavan, a resident of Umred. The girl had went missing on August 6, 2018.
Her parents, who are daily wage workers, had lodged a missing complaint with Umred police. However, the investigation had not moved even an inch for last three years.
WAPI Sheetal Khobragade resumed investigation in the case. After checking Call Detail Records (CDRs) of the girl and her two sisters, the police suspected some phone calls made by Jitesh Waman Kumbhre (24), a liquor peddler, who was living at Mangli (Arab) village in Nagbhir teshil of Chandrapur district.
The woman cop conducted secret inquiry at Mangli (Arab) village and activated network of informers. A Standard X student told the informers that he had gone with Kumbhre to pick the girl from Umred in 2018. WAPI Khobragade then rounded up Kumbhre and his wife and interrogated them separately. During cross-checking of their statements, the police understood that the accused were misleading as their statement differed. The police then ‘grilled’ Kumbhre after which he confessed to committing murder of the girl. Kumbhre was married and father of a daughter and got involved in extra-marital affair with the girl. As the girl was forcing him for marriage, he had hatched a conspiracy of murder with involvement of two more persons to get rid of her.
He had picked the girl from Umred and drove the vehicle to his village. After the 16-year-old boy deobarded from the vehicle at Mangli (Arab) village, Kumbhre took the girl in the jungle of Kanhalgaon where his agricultural land is situated. He had allegedly strangled to death Aishwarya and buried the body near his farm. The police are suspecting role of two more persons, including his wife in the murder case and helping Kumbhre in destroying the evidence.
When Kumbhre was taken to the police station and he told the police that he was going to attend nature’s call. The police allowed him to went inside the toilet where he consumed Harpic toilet cleaner and fell unconscious. After not getting any response from Kumbhre, the police forcibly broken the door only to see Kumbhre lying on the floor of toile. He was immediately admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital. After registering a case under Sections 302 and 201 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused and the police have registered another case against him under Section 309 of IPC.

IGP Mallikarjuna Prasanna By Dheeraj Fartode  Published on Feb/17/2019 NOT many are aware of an episode during the then US President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2010. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
