The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Beltarodi Police have booked an account for staging a robbery of Rs 5.64 lakh and sending the Police on wild goose chase.
The accused has been identified as Atul Jamnadas Parate (37), a resident of Plot No. 50, Sai Nagar, Pram Nagar, Nagpur. He is working as accountant in a hostel at Gumgaon.
On Tuesday evening, complainent Sarang Prakash Upgandalwar (45), a resident of Flat No. 102, Laxmi Nagar, near Bal Jagat and Director of the hostel, had given Rs 5.64 lakh cash to Parate and asked him to deposit at his home in Laxmi Nagar.
After reaching Nagpur, Parate dialed phone number of Upgandalwar and informed him that he was robbed of the cash by two robbers on outer ring road. Upgandalwar asked him to lodge a complaint with the Police. Parate then appraoched the Police and lodged compalint.
During investiation and panchanama process, the Police noticed variation in his statements. “We suspected his story when showed two different spots during spot visits,” said Police. The cops have checked CCTV footage and noticed that no two bike-borne robbers were passing through the road as described by Parate.
The Police then took him to Police station for questioning. After grilled by the Police during interrogation, Parate spilled the beans and confessed for the crime. The cops have recovered the cash from his house. An offence under Section 408 of Indian Penal Code was registered against him. Further investigation is on.
