It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. A 13-year-old girl was gang raped at a crematorium in Hingna area when she was going to attend nature’s call on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. The girl was admitted at the hospital and her condition is critical.
The accused have been identified as Amit Jaiprakash Thakur (18) and Balwant Gond (20) and two other juveniles.
According to police, the girl had gone to attend nature’s call in the bushes on Sunday at 11.30 pm. Amit and Balwant stopped the girl and forced her to sit on the motorcycle. The boys took the girl to crematorium where they raped her for two hours. They also threatened her of dire consequences if she narrate the incident to anyone. The girl somehow managed to reach the house and informed her parents about the crime. The parents informed the police about the incident and rushed her for medical check-up. The girl was admitted to the hospital.
A police officer informed that one of the accused was in contact with the girl. The accused have been booked under Sections 376 (d) (a), 354 (a), 323, 363, 504, 506 of Indian Penal Code, sections 6, 8 and 12 of POSCO act and Sections 3 (a) (w) (I)(II), 3 (2) (v) of The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
