Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. Six persons including two children sustained grievous burn injuries when a gas cylinder exploded in a house at Gausiya Colony in Bada Tajbagh area of Sakkardara Police Station on Friday evening. The injured persons are identified as Shakil Sheikh (35) his wife Sabina (25), their children Sajid (3), Albiya (5) and Shakil’s friends Ashfak Sheikh (40) and Asif Sheikh (32).
According to police, Shakil was a scrap dealer and living in rented accommodation of Mujaffar Ali. A wielding gas cylinder was stored by the Shakil in the home. When Sabina was preparing food on LPG stove, the wielding gas cylinder exploded. The six persons sustained burn injuries after the explosion. The injured persons were transported to hospital. A fire tender of Fire and Emergency services of NMC was pressed into service to control the fire. Huge nnumbersof onlookers were gathered at the spot after the incident.
