Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. A defective water cooler claimed life of a five-year-old girl at Bhandewadi area of Kalamna Police Station on Saturday. Mother of the girl had gone to job and she along with a brother and sister were in the house, said the police.
Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) N T Gosawi said that the girl -- Khushi Manoj Kose (5) -- came in contact with the defective water cooler when she opened door of refrigerator for water bottle. She suffered electric shock and collapsed. Her brother and sister informed neighbors about the incident. The neighbors rushed her to hospital and doctors declared her dead.
PSI Gosawi informed that the mother had gone to office when the incident occurred. The family was living in rented house. Kalamna police have registered a case of accidental death and started investigation.
