| Fire in oil godown. Representional picture |
A major fire broke out at two godown at Control Wadi, Shivaji Nagar, area late on Sunday night. The fire gutted goods worth lakh of rupees. Such was the intensity of fire that Fire and Emergency Services personnel evacuated homes located behind the godown for safety. The flames were leaping high and could be seen from nearly a kilometre and hence all available fire tenders were requisitioned to help control the blaze.
As per primary information with Fire and Emergency Services of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, a call was received regarding necessity of fire tenders to help douse a big fire. The fire as per information started from a godown stocking edible oil. The presence of inflammable material only helped the flames to spread quite fast and a nearby godown stocked with perfumed too was engulfed by the fire within few minutes.
The fire was first noticed around 9 pm as per Fire and Emergency Services Control Room. Within matter of minutes the fire assumed devastating proportion threatening nearby houses as well as other godowns located in the nearby area. The heady combination of edible oil and perfume only aggravated the matter and spraying water only did not help bring the flames under control.
Seven fire tenders of NMC were dispatched to the spot as the flames were out of control. Fire tenders from Ordnance Factory and other nearby fire stations were also rushed to the spot to avoid a major catastrophe. The firefighters were busy trying to halt spread of the flames since the oil had spilled into major portion causing difficulties in controlling the fire.
The godown that stocked edible oil is owned by Amit Khandelwal. It required nearly two hours for firemen to control the leaping flames. Primary findings suspect an electrical short circuit as the cause of fire. Further investigations would revealed the exact reason.
