The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. A woman strangled her husband to death and concocted a story of accidental death. The crime to fore after brother of the deceased approach the police and lodged a complaint against the woman. Finding of autopsy report also claimed ‘strangulation’ as the reason of death.
The deceased has been identified as Nitin Ramesh Nayar (27), a resident of Baitul, Madhya Pradesh while accused is Swati Nitin Nayar (25), a resident of Kerala.
Nitin’s father was admitted at Wockhardt hospital in last week of April and Nitin and Swati were staying at a rented room. Swati phoned younger brother of Nitin and stated that Nitin died in an accident. When the family members reached the spot, Swati told the relatives that Nitin slipped on the floor and died due to severe head injuries. Later, the relatives took the dead body to Betul where last rites were performed.
Relatives of the deceased informed that Swati was divorced from first marriage and married with Nitin six months ago. However, she was used brawl with Nitin over petty issues. The police are now suspecting that Swati have strangled Nitin after brawl in the room.
Failure of Police investigation
The entire case is the example of faulty police investigation. Family members of deceased said that strangulation marks were visible on the neck of Nitin and they have also recovered
Swati’s love letters written to third persons. However, the Bajaj Nagar police was not able to find ‘visible’ strangulation marks and ‘love letters’ which were in the pocket of Nitin. Woman Police Sub-Inspector (WPSI) Raut performed Panchanama on spot.
Nitin’s father -- Ramesh -- was admitted at Wockheardt hospital. Soon after hearing about death of son, Ramesh Nayar died after three days. The family members said that there brother and father died due to Swati. It may be mentioned that Nitin’s parents were not in support of the marriage. However, Nitin married with Swati after felling into love.
