Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. Lakadganj Police arrested two persons from stealing a truck laden with ‘Supari’ (betel nut) consignment worth Rs 20 lakh.
The accused have been identified as Mohd Shakil Khan Mohd Sharif Khan (48), a resident of Pili Haweli square and Rajendra Anandrao Chambhare (49), a resident of Mahalaxmi Nagar, Kalamna. However, main accused -- Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Haryana -- is still at large.
According to police, Mukesh Kumar was frequently engaged by the trader -- Anup Nagariya (44), a resident of Surya Nagar -- for transpiration of betel nut from Nagpur to Delhi hence, he was trustworthy. On May 2, 2017, Mukesh Kumar arrived with a new truck (HR-38/U-3712) and Nagariya loaded 21,000 tonnes of betel nut in the truck and asked to deliver the consignment at Delhi. In spite of reaching Delhi, the truck driver switched off his mobile phone and went missing.
After registering offence under Sections 406, 420 and 34 of Indian Penal Code. Using mobile surveillance system, the cops have located Mohd Shakil and Rajendra Chambhare and recovered the stolen betel nut from a godown. Police Inspector S. B. Mane, API S. D. Nikam, HC Ajay Rode, Satish Pande, Santosh Gupta and Harish were made the arrest.
