It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. A SPEEDING Mahindra Bolero pick-up van mowed down two persons, including a woman, and injured three others seriously on Kanholibara-Takalghat Road in Hingna area on Thursday evening. The driver of the’killer,’ who ran away after the incident, was later arrested by Hingna Police.
Identified as Pratibha Khandeshwar Gawhade (30) and Laxman Ramesh Kukde (37), the deceased were the residents of Kanholibara. Injured Chhaya Prakash Kukde, Shobha Bhandekar (50) and Nilofer Pathan (25) were rushed to the hospital.
According to Police, a Mahindra Bolero pick-up van (MH-40/DM-4418) first hit Laxman Prakash Kukde, who was coming from opposite direction on a Hero Honda (MH-31/BE-5317), killing him on the spot. The van driver lost control of his vehicle. He hit Pratibha Gawhade and killed her. The rashly-driven vehicle then hit Chhaya Kukde, Shobha Bhandekar and Nilofer Pathan, who were going with Pratibha, injuring them seriously. The driver fled the spot fearing public violence.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by Mahadeo Keshav Kukde (50), Hingna Police arrested the driver, Vishal Pundlik Kohle (22), a resident of Gandhi-Khapri, on charges under Sections 279, 337, 338, 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code read with Section 184 of Motor Vehicle Act. PSI Jadhav is investigating the case.
