A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

Nagpur police to challenge High Court's 'Dabba' trade verdict before Supreme Court

Commissioner of Police Dr K Venkatesham assured that law would not spare anyone
By Dheeraj Fartode
City Police is all set to approach the Supreme Court against the recent ruling of the High Court in ‘Dabba’ trading scam case. The High Court has questioned the legality of FIR lodged against the alleged scamsters and also held in some cases that no prima-facie evidence was available against the accused persons, thereby taking steam out of much-hyped ‘Dabba’ trade case. “We will challenge the verdict after studying the judgement copy in detail,” said Commissioner of Police Dr K Venkatesham.
Dr K Venkatesham, Commissioner of police, Nagpur
Interacting with reporters as part of Diwali Milan programme on Friday, the Commissioner of Police said that the officials were waiting for the judgement copy. “After studying the judgement, the police will challenge the judgement with new observations,” said Dr Venkatesham. It may be mentioned that the High Court had held that Police and Economic Offences Wing (EoW) inherently lacked powers to initiate action and register FIR in ‘Dabba’ trading scam against the accused for alleged violations under Securities Contract Act, 1956 and the authorities specified under Section 26 alone could initiate action. Central or State Government or the Securities and Stock Exchange Board of India (SEBI) or the recognised Stock Exchange, alone could initiate action by filing a complaint before the Special Court.
“Police cannot make investigation into this offence on the basis of the report lodged by a Police Head Constable or any other police officer as a police officer is not included in the meaning conveyed by the expression ‘any person’ contained in Section 26 of the Act,” the High Court had observed.
The Commissioner also informed that they have launched crackdown against criminals to put a check on growing crime. Cops will implement beat policing in the city. Every police officer will be allotted a specified area of the police station. And, community meetings will be organised to strengthen people-police connect, he said. After hearing mainly complaints about police station officers taking lot much time to register a FIR, the CP assured that the time would reduce in near future. On the issue traffic violations, the CP said that they have taken many measures to ensure smooth flow of traffic on city roads. Deputy Commissioner of Police Ishu Sindhu was present.

IGP Mallikarjuna Prasanna By Dheeraj Fartode  Published on Feb/17/2019 NOT many are aware of an episode during the then US President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2010. The world’s most powerful man was made to wait for 11 minutes in his car while an Indian cop took on American officials for their unwarranted interference in the US President’s security. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
