The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. DCP Zone IV Ishu Sindhu joined in August, taking over reins from DCP Chandra Kishore Mina. The cops stuck to basic policing in a bid to tackle the rising crime graph, a trend common in Urban areas. The Zone recorded 31 cases of murder in year 2012, and in 2013 there were 29 cases while detection was of 28 cases. The Zone have also observed declining trend in attempt to murder cases i.e. 35 in year 2013 to 27 in year 2014.
When one went into reason it was learnt that maximum preventive actions were taken by DCP Mina and later carried on by Sindhu in the Zone. The Zone invoked MCOCA in one cases, detention of five under MPDA and 26 externment against goons. This had the desired effect and immediately reflected in crime graph.
Only one dacoity occurred in the Zone in a year. DCP Mina was known for his thrust on keeping-up pressure on force and sticking to time tested styles in tackling criminals.

The Zone have also reported decrease in robbery and HBT’s cases as 51 cases were reported with detection of 29 in year 2014. There were 325 HBTs in Year 2013 and police managed to bring down the figure to 300 in Year 2014.
In Zone IV, Nandanvan police recorded eight murders, followed by seven in Hudkeshwar, five in Ajni, four each in Imambada and Sakkardara and one in Dhantoli police stations. The murder under Dhantoli police station remains undetected.
Ajni, Hudkeshwar and Nandanvan police stations have reported 79, 74 and 75 HBTs in year 2014 respectively. The same police stations had reported 68, 119 and 56 HBTs in year 2013. While Hudkeshwar police stations are showing declining trend, the Ajni and Nandanvan police station showed rise in cases of HBTs.
After studying the pattern of crime in the Zone, DCP Sindhu have introduced a new pro-active style of policing. He has assigned a criminal to a policemen and this continuous man to man tracking has provided good results.
