The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Among the four Zones, Zone-III crime graph was lowest. In 2013, the Zone registered 754 serious crimes and the figure rose to 875 in Year 2014. Zone III reported maximum cases of murders in the city i.e. 32 in Year 2014.
Kalamna and Yashodhara Nagar police registered eight murders cases each in Year 2014 followed by five each in Kotwali and Ganeshpeth, four in Lakadganj and two in Tehsil police stations jurisdictions. Kalamna and Lakadganj police stations had reported 12 murders and nine murders in year 2013 respectively. This Zone is most troublesome for city police as it is well known to have maximum concentration of big time criminals. Also the areas has concentration of big markets where daily transactions of huge value takes place. Another factor that
is troublesome for cops is that migrated labours who have made it their home in this areas.
DCP Nirmala Devi (Now, acting as DCP Zone I) had taken charge of the Zone in month of August 2014 from Sanjay Darade. The Zone covers Kotwali, Tehsil, Kalamna, Lakadganj, Ganeshpeth and Yashodhara Nagar police stations. Out of total 32 murders, the police have managed to solve 30 and maintained 100% detection rate in 21 attempt to murder cases. Despite spurt in thefts, the crime rate of Zone was same as that of year 2013.
In preventive steps, the DCPs have done a MCOCA and a MPDA cases and externed 27 goons in year 2014. The Zone showed declining trend in rape cases as 21 rape cases were reported in Year 2014 as against 27 cases reported in year 2013. However, cases of molestation increased by 10 in Year 2014.
