The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. The DCP’s succeeded in reducing thefts cases. However, there is slight increase in cases of murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and also in crime against women. The Zone covers police stations viz Panchpaoli, Jaripatka, Koradi, Sadar and Gittikhadan, and they registered 1018 crime cases in Class I-V, an increase of 65 cases as pervious year the figure was 953 cases. The Zone have however fared better on detection front as they cracked 453 cases in year 2014, a jump of 15% compared to previous year. Five criminals under MPDA Act was slapped on five goons and 29 others were externed.
Out of 23 murder cases and 25 attempt to murder cases, the Zone detected 21 murders and 19 attempt to murder cases. Jaripatka police station recorded eight murders followed by seven in Koradi, five in Panchpaoli, three in Koradi and nil in Sadar police station's jurisdiction. About 706 thefts were reported in the Zone and 214 of them were detected and Sadar police station recorded maximum cases i.e. 208.
Figures of crime against women put the Zone under scanner as the jump is of 50% in rape and 100% in molestation cases in year 2014. In 2013, just 21 cases of rape and 53 molestation cases were reported and last year the figures are 31 rape cases and 98 molestation cases in year 2014.
