Election action: Excise crackdown yields illicit liquor worth Rs. 7.39 lakh in district

After model code of conduct was enforced in the State for forthcoming elections, State Excise Department geared-up its machinery to crackdown on illegal transportation of liquor. The department have conducted 71 raids in last two weeks and seized liquor worth Rs 7.39 lakh in the district alone.
Last year in the month of August, the department had registered 127 cases and seized property worth Rs 8.12 lakh. However, after enforcement of model code of conduct the department have seized around same amount of valuables/liquor in just 15-days time. This indicates the role of liquor in the polls.
The figures shows that transportation of illicit liquor from other States has got a boost post announcement of elections. According to official information, Excise Department has conducted 71 raids on the basis of specific tip-off and arrested 43 accused for transportation of illicit liquor.
Demands for mahua liquor is still high as 90% of seized liquor is of this form only. According to information, 11,740 bulk litre (BL) mahua liquor worth Rs 2,34,800 was seized by the department followed by 1,565 BL illicit countrymade liquor worth Rs 78,250. Quantity of seized country made liquor (CL) is 77.78 BL and Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) is 15.4 BL and value is Rs 14,372 and Rs 9,921 respectively.
Superintendent of state excise department of District Mohan Darde told ‘The Hitavada’ that the department has stepped-up vigil in the district to crackdown on transportation and manufacturing of illicit liquor. “We are taking all necessary steps as per the guidelines,” said the Superintendent.

The Nagpur unit of State Excise Department is looking after work of 13 tehsils of district. As per the sources, the department is reeling under vacancies that hinders the operations against illicit liquor transportation in the district.
The district have 11 liquor manufacturing units and as per the norms of State Excise Department an officer and a constable has to be deployed at each of the unit. The department have two check posts --at Mansar and Khursapar-- to put a check of liquor transportation in the State. To handle work of 13 tehsils, the State Excise has only seven Inspectors and 11 Sub-Inspectors/Assistant Sub-Inspectors along with 24 constables.
