The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. Nandanvan police have arrested three persons in connection with murder of Gaffar Ali Ramjan Ali (40), brother of goon Shamsher Ali. Gaffar was shot dead at his eatery located at Aurangzeb Square, Hasanbagh, on Tuesday evening.
The accused are identified as Alim Khan Taslim Khan (43), Kalim Khan Taslim Khan (51), and Maehfuj Ahmed Kabul Hasan (24), all residents of Hasanbagh. The trio were locked in dispute over a prime land with Shamsher Ali who at present is behind the bars in an attempted to murder case.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Zone-IV) Chandra Kishore Mina said that the accused were taken into custody and their interrogation is on. However the police are yet to recover weapons used in the crime, Mauser pistols.
Special teams are formed by the police for investigating the case, sources informed. It can be mentioned that Gaffar was involved in property dealing and the shooting was fallout of the land over which both parties have staked claim. The goons came on bike are targeted Gaffar and four others associates when they were seated at the eatery. While Gaffar sustained three to four bullet wounds and died almost instantaneously, the other two escaped with injuries.
Special bandobast including Quick Response Team (QRT) were deployed at the Hasanbagh area for funeral of Gaffar. DCP Mina was personally monitoring the situation. Eye-witnesses have confirmed involvement of the accused in the crime, the sources claimed.
