Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. A gang of youth pulled of a sensational dacoity at a bungalow of beetulnut merchant in upscale Civil Lines area on Thursday night. The incident occurred around 8.15 pm when five youths stormed at the residence of Lalit Kothari. The sprawling bungalow of Kothari is located on Temple Road, in the lane adjacent to Labour Court. According to preliminary estimates booty wroth Rs. 50 lakh was looted by the gang.
At time of incident Kothari’s wife and his daughter were at home. The youth first rang the door bell and moved away from front door. Kothari’s wife saw through key hole but could not find anyone at the door and hence stepped out to verify as to who had rang the bell. This proved to be big mistake as the youth who had taken position by side of wall grabbed her and pushed her inside the bungalow and latched the door.

The gang brandished a firearm and sharp weapons as the youth held the frightened mother-daughter duo in a corner of the house. While one of two youth held the two, the other got busy in locating cash and ornaments inside the sprawling house. Around 8.30 pm Kothari along with his friend arrived at the house. Though frightened at this development the youth quickly rolled out their next plan. One of them hold the little girl and directed the housewife to open the door without making any alarm while two youth hid behind the door.
Kothari had no idea as to happening at his home when he returned from his shop in Maskasath, where police said he is into beetulnut wholesale trade. The dacoits let Kothari enter into home and his friend were shoved aside and held at gun point.
After collecting gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees the dacoits sped on mobikes. Though Kothari had employed security guard, but police learnt the guard was on leave since last two-days. Scared to hilt Kothari family stepped out of their rooms only after about an hour. Kothari then called his friends and held confabulations with them.
The police was told about the dacoity at 10.30 pm. The entire top brass scrambled out on streets and dashed to the spot. Commissioner of Police K K Pathak himself arrived fast and was seen in consultations with his officers. A dog squad was also called but was of little help as due to rains it could not lift the scent from the crime spot. Till filing of the report Kothari was still to recover from shock and hence police could not get details of property looted from the bungalow.
