By Dheeraj Fartode
‘Police Officer of the Month’, ‘Police Man of the Month’ and ‘Reward for Excellent Work’ were some the awards that were given in Nagpur Police Commissionerate to policemen for their outstanding performance. However after Commissioner of Police (CP) K K Pathak took over in December last the awards were withdrawn. Till Pathak, each of the Police Commissioner dutifully followed the regimen of continuing with tradition of honouring good work of police personnel from constable to Police Inspector level, also considered as field force.
Former Director General of Police (DGP) Arvind Inamdar and was the one who introduced the awards system during his stint as Commissioner of Police at Nagpur Police Commissionerate. Recouting it to ‘The Hitavada’, Inamdar said the scheme was started in Nagpur city in 1992. Informing about basic concept of the scheme, he said that sometimes policemen do their job of crime controlling by taking extra efforts. Common man does not know the nitty-gritty of crime control or solving the cases or the hard work that went into apprehending the offenders. Hence it was decided to felicitate such police officer by going out of Government’s way to promote excellence and encourage other policemen. Many cops nabbed dreaded goons without fearing for their life. Hence, as a senior police officer we applauded the common policemen for their work, Inamdar said.
Special Inspector General (Retd) and former Joint Commissioner of Police of city police, Babasaheb Kangale said that the scheme was good initiative by former police officers and continued for almost 20- years. Explaining about the scheme, he said that the officers were rewarded in the monthly parade at parade ground. “It was the overwhelming experience for that officer who received the reward.” Earlier, photograph of Officer of the Month was to put-up inside police station. The scheme encouraged and motivated many others to do good work, he said.
Current city police boss, K K Pathak has his own reason for closing the scheme. He said that every police officer have their own policies and we are also felicitating policemen with appreciation ‘words’. The ‘words’ of appreciation are akin to award, he claimed. Sometimes we also call the police person to Friday parade and felicitate him, he said.
