Cops attribute increase in number to courage shown by victims in registering cases

By Dheeraj Fartode
Nagpur Range comprising four districts of Eastern Vidarbha has registered 65 per cent rise in number of rape and molestation cases in first nine months of this year, over the previous year. Cops, however, have attributed this increase in number of rape and molestation cases to increased awareness among victims and courage shown by them.
As per the official data, four districts under Nagpur Range had registered a total of 156 cases of rape nad 290 of molestation in the year 2011. The next year, the Range saw a dip in number of rape cases but a rise of 40 cases of molestation. However, after the national outrage over brutal gang-rape and murder of 23-year-old paramedical students in Delhi, there has been spurt in registering of rape and molestation cases in Nagpur Range also. In the first nine months of this year, 216 cases of rape and 454 cases of molestation have been registered. This indicates 65.70 per cent rise in rape cases and 72.68 per cent rise in molestation cases.
Nagpur Range comprises four districts namely Nagpur Rural, Wardha, Chandrapur, and Bhandara. If one considers district-wise scenario, Nagpur Rural has seen cases of rape double. In 2012, the district had recorded 29 cases of rape. In first nine months of 2013, the number has gone up to 58. In Chandrapur district, number of rape cases rose from 47 in 2012 to 74 in 2013 (till September). Wardha and Bhandara districts also registered rise in rape cases over the previous year. It remains to be seen whether there is further increase in number of rape cases in remaining three months of this year.
Similarly, there has been rise in number of molestation cases also. Chandrapur district had registered 108 molestation cases in 2011 and the number rose to 119 in 2012. In 2013, the number has increased to 135. Nagpur Rural, which had registered 65 rape cases in 2011 and 82 in 2012, saw 107 cases registered between January and September this year. Wardha district saw 149 cases of molestation registered this year, as against 93 in 2012. Bhandara recorded 63 cases of molestation against 36 in previous year.
Crime against women

Asked about the spurt in number of rape and molestation cases, Special Inspector General of Police (Nagpur Range) Rajinder Singh said, “The rise in reporting of cases could be attributed to increased level of awareness in victims of these crimes, especially after the Delhi incident.” According to him, registration of more number of cases was a positive sign as far as courage of victims is concerned. The cops also were made aware of issues and they registered cases on receipt of complaint from women. “We take care that no woman faces atrocities. We also assure that atrocities against women will not be tolerated,” he added.

IGP Prasanna : The man who stopped Obama’s convoy

IGP Mallikarjuna Prasanna By Dheeraj Fartode  Published on Feb/17/2019 NOT many are aware of an episode during the then US President Barack Obama’s visit to India in 2010. The world’s most powerful man was made to wait for 11 minutes in his car while an Indian cop took on American officials for their unwarranted interference in the US President’s security. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script also ha

Longest cable-stayed bridge to boost tourism at Ambhora

CONSTRUCTION work of 700-metre-long cable-stayed bridge, longest in the country, with a viewing gallery at the top at Ambhora in Kuhi tehsil is near completion. The bridge would be open for traffic in December this year providing a major boost to tourism at Shree Chaitanyeshwar Mahadev temple at Ambhora. It is set to open doors of development for the backward area of Kuhi and Umred tehsil. Ambhora, located 75 km from Nagpur city, is a famous religious and tourist place in Vidarbha. It is situated at the confluence of five rivers -- Wainganga, Kanhan, Aam, Kolari and Murza. Just around a decade ago the river bank housing Ambhora used to see a flux of tourists from all over the State. However, the banks were submerged in water after the construction of Gosikhurd dam which led to rise in water levels. Since then, tourist flow at Ambhora has also declined. However, now with the construction of the new bridge tourists will get a chance see the scenic backwaters across the river bed which is
