The City police have put in place a high-tech security plan for New Year’s Eve to ensure safe and peaceful celebrations. Sniffer dogs will be used to hunt down drug consumption on city roads, while drones will scan rooftops and isolated areas to prevent illegal activities. In addition, police will set up checking and nakabandi at 131 points across the city to keep strict watch on drunk driving and maintain law and order throughout the night. Around 2,500 policemen, from police constables to the Police Commissioner , will be deployed on city roads to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents during the celebrations. Tension prevailed on Wardha road after a rashly driven Scorpio knocked dead a teenager near Chinchbhuvan under the jurisdiction of Sonegaon police station on Sunday night. Following the mishap, people gathered on the spot, vandalised the four wheeler and torched tyres and blocked the road in protest. Traffic on stretch of national highway no. 7 on Wardha road was brought to halt for an hour.
Police said that Vinay Satish Kale (16), a resident of Chinchbhuvan, was crossing the road on his bicycle when the tragedy stuck. A rashly driven Scorpio car (MH-31/C-5246) came from Nagpur and hit Vinay. Police added that the Scorpio was in great speed and the driver failed to control the vehicle. Vinay sustained grievous head injuries in the mishap as he was dragged for nearly 50 feets and died on the spot. Eye-witnesses informed that despite hitting the minor the accused driver couldn’t control the speed limit and dragged him to few feet away, causing his death. Vinay had gone to meet his friend staying nearby, said the police.
Following the mishap people gathered to the spot and smashed windscreen of the vehicle. However driver of the vehicle managed to flee from the spot. Some youths torched tyres of the four wheeler and kept I on the road. Traffic between Nagpur and Wardha was brought on halt for around one hour. Staff of Sonegaon police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Sonegaon police have registered the case and started investigations.
