Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Dakshin Purva Madhya Railway Mens Union (DPMRMU) has got a shot in its arm for the forthcoming Secret Ballot as it has been extended support from Rail Kamgar Sena (RKS). This was informed at a media conference by Salil Lawrence, General Secretary, DPMRMU, and Manoj Samarth, Working President, RKS, Bilaspur Zone, the other day.
During last Secret Ballot, DPMRMU had gained 55 per cent vote share while RKS had managed just five per cent vote. For the forthcoming election to determine railway employees representative, the two Union have entered into an alliance. Lawrence said he is hopeful their alliance would emerge victorious and listed the problems that were resolved by his Union during last five years. We are working to solve problems of workers and now with RKS with us the voice of employees would be more powerful.
Samarth in a reply to a question stated that as both Unions have same agenda we agreed on a common minimum programme.” Nagpur, Bilaspur and Raipur Divisions form the Bilaspur Zones under South Eastern Central Railway (SECR) and there are 38,000 voters who are eligible to cast their ballot. Nagpur Division has 11000, Bilaspur has 17,000 while Raipur has 10,000 voters. Divisional Secretary of RKS Sanjay Sonare, RKS office bearers S Pandey, M Tigga, Munna Ganram, SECRMU office bearers Dinesh Kubhre, Vinod Pardhi, Ghanshyam Wakodikar, S K Sinha, Bishwajeet Dey were also present at the press conference.
