Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Nine cows and a youth died after a small tempo carrying them collided with truck on Bhandara road under the jurisdiction of Mouda police station in wee hours of Saturday.
Police said that the mishap occurred at 4.30 am when the Tempo (MH-40/363) carrying the cows was heading towards Nagpur. Driver of the tempo failed to control the vehicle and rammed into the truck (MH-06/AC-4357). Nine cows were seriously injured in the mishap and died on the spot. Driver, Mohd Basir Jagir Ansari, a resident of Yashodhara Nagar and cleaner Durgesh Prakash Mohibe (26), a resident of Amgao had also sustained grievous injuries in the mishap. Driver Mohd Basir succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Mouda police have registered the case under sections 279, 337, 304 (A), 429 of IPC read with 184 of MVA. Further investigations are on.
