Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. A housewife was allegedly torched by her hubby after she refused to cook eggs. The incident occurred on Friday night and the injured women succumbed to injuries at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
The incident was reported from Shikshak Colony under jurisdiction of Butibori police station around 7.30 pm. The accused is identified as Kailash Pandurang Yedamewar (34). A habitual drunkard, Yedamewar arrived home in inebriated condition. He directed wife, Shubhangi too cook eggs to which latter objected, as she was strict vegetarian.
A quarrel ensued between the duo and soon took the turn for worse when the hubby threatened to kill her. Frustrated with this daily trouble, Shubhangi sprinkled kerosene over herself and challenged her husband to kill her. In the heat of the moment Yedamewar lit a matchstick and set his wife alight. Hell broke loose and hearing wild cries of Shubhangi, Yedamewar got frightened and took to his heels. Neighbours rushed in and managed to douse the flames off Shubhangi.
Staff of Butibori police station arrived at the spot and rushed Shubhangi to GMCH, where she succumbed to burn injuries in wee hours of Saturday, stated Inspector Digamber Chavan.
In a complaint, filed by Premlal Mangal Wakamwar (44), (uncle of Shubhangi), he claimed that Kailash would case aspersion on Shubhangi and used to torture her.
PI Chavan added that the relationship between the couple was almost broken and quarrels were regular. Yedamewar was a native of Kinhi village of Yavatmal district and he married Shubhangi around nine years ago. The couple have a six-year-old daughter. On the basis of dying declaration of Shubhangi, cops have registered a case under sections 498(A) and 302 of Indian Penal Code and arrested Kailash Yedamewar. Further investigations are on.
