The Beat Constables are the best public relation manager. Their overall conduct makes or mars the image of the department. Taking cue from the feedback received from the general people, Traffic Control Branch has geared-up for an image makeover.
The nature of complaints are general in nature, and most related to behaviour. We are aware that cops on duty may not be at fault but they do need counselling as this will alter their lookout and help them to handle stress in a better way, said Jeevraj Dabhade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Control Branch, Nagpur city police.
We felt that cops need to reorient themselves and their thinking. Hence, we have taken an initiative and started workshops to equip our personnel with better understanding of human nature. The aim is to dispel the common nature of complaints about arrogance of cops, our personnel are rude and they care damn about worries of people. Elaborating more on the training programme, DCP Dabhade said the Traffic Control Branch has 540 personnel catering to population of 26 lakh in second capital of the State. The Traffic Control Branch personnel are working under tremendous pressure as their numbers have not increased in relation to population growth and exponential growth in number of vehicles plying on the road.
The Department is holding continuous workshops every week for the staff. About 30 police personnel are being drafted for the workshop. The programme started for past one month and four workshops were already held, said the DCP. Personality Development, awareness about traffic signs, updating their knowledge on changes in laws. The senior officers are the faculty and they are providing them valuable guidance. The workshop lasts for eight hours long workshop ad DCP Dabhade is hopeful that post completion of training, the people in Orange city will come across Traffic Control Branch personnel as much better human beings.
Asked about the problems of personnel, DCP Dabhade admitted that the heavy work load is one of the prime factors for irritation, and general lack of alacrity among the Traffic Control Branch personnel. But in this days of multi tasking one has to take initiative and results will be for them to see. In the workshop we are instilling the confidence among our personnel that they have to act with sense of social responsibility.
Admitting that the change would not be overnight but somewhere the start was necessary and DCP Dabhade said such counselling and training would equip the personnel on streets to manage themselves and conduct themselves in dignity.
