The State Home Department in Maharashtra is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its top police leadership, including the position of Director General of Police (DGP) and Police Commissioners of Nagpur and Thane. The impending retirement of the current DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31 has prompted the department to commence the process of selecting his successor.A top rank official said that several prominent names have emerged as contenders for the esteemed position of State DGP. The frontrunner is Senior IPS Officer Rashmi Shukla, who currently serves as the Director General (DG) of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar is also a strong candidate for the role. FURIOUS over re-induction of senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister, the Opposition took out a silent march carrying black flag to the legislature on the very first day of winter session. Legistators from all Opposition parties including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) carried placards and banners against Ajit Pawar slamming for his alleged role in irrigation scam and desperation to return back to seat of power.
Opposition leader Eknath Khadse, Sena group leader Subhash Desai, MNS group leader Bala Nandgaonkar, BJP MLAs Devendra Fadanvis, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Sudhakar Deshmukh, Sudhir Parwe, Shiv Sena MLA Vinod Ghosalkar and MNS MLAs Pravin Darekar and others took part in the march.
Pawar had resigned in September in view of irregularities in irrigation projects in the State only to make a comeback last week. The Opposition also plans to target several ministers of the ruling Congress-NCP coalition for their alleged involvement in various scams and irregularities.
