Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. TENSION erupted in Government Medical College (GMC) after a group of medical students clashed with some youths and assaulted a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) on Saturday evening. Ajni Police booked 10-15 youths including medical students for creating ruckus and attacking PSI Nitin Indrale. Soon after the cops rounded up the accused students, a large number of GMC students gathered in front of Ajni Police Station.
According to Police, a youth Vipin Siddharth Bangar (22), a resident of Jogi Nagar, and his girl friend were talking after parking their respective two- wheelers near the rear gate of the GMC. Amit Arun Shende, a MBBS student, allegedly picked up a quarrel with Vipin saying that outsiders were not allowed in the college premises. After heated exchanges, Amit immediately called other medical students. Bangar too contacted his friends on his cellphone and called them. Both the groups then clashed. More than 50-60 medical students also gathered.
Staff from Ajni Police Station led by PSI Indrale rushed to the spot on being informed. While cops were trying to disperse them, Dr Hemantkumar Parmanand Umar (23), post-graduate student, came and thrashed PSI Indrale. Dr Umar then slapped PSI Indrale and obstructed the cops in their duty. Sensing trouble, PSI Indrale summoned additional force and rounded up 10 to 15 persons including Dr Umar and some medical students. Following a complaint lodged by PSI Indrale, an offence under Sections 353, 332 and 186 of the IPC has been registered against Dr Umar.
On the basis of the statement given by Sanket Sanjay Wadokar (20), a MBBS II years student and a resident of Room No 20, GMC Boys Hostel, cops registered an offence under Sections 143, 147, 148, 294, 506 b, 323, 34 of the IPC read with Sections 135 of the Bombay Police Act against Vipin Bangar and 4-5 others. Similarly, Vipin Bangar lodged a counter complaint following which Ajni Police registered an offence under Sections 294. 323 and 506 of the IPC against Dr Hemantkumar Umar, Sanket Wadokar, Mahesh Vyankatrao Chanaf, and Amit Shende.
