In a deeply painful incident that has left the city in shock, a mother and her young daughter ended their lives together at their house in Venkatesh Nagar area of Nandanvan police station as they were unable to cope with overwhelming emotional grief. Police said the young woman was deeply affected after the recent loss of her newborn child and her mother too was under severe stress seeing her daughter’s condition.
The deceased have been identified as Sangita Shriram Dhabale (52), a school teacher, and her daughter Akanksha Lokesh Brahme (29), an engineering graduate and homemaker. According to police Akanksha had been going through severe emotional distress after losing her newborn baby two months ago. Following the tragedy, she had been staying with her mother.
“Preliminary inquiry suggests that both women were under extreme mental stress due to personal circumstances. The loss of the child had deeply affected the daughter,” a senior officer from Nandanvan police said.
Police said the incident came to light on Friday morning when Akanksha’s husband, Lokesh, tried to contact her but received no response. Worried, he rushed to the house along with relatives. Finding the door locked from inside and getting no reply, they looked through a window and were shocked to see both women hanging.
“After confirming the situation, the family broke open the door. Our team reached the spot immediately after receiving information and conducted the panchnama,” the officer added.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and doctors confirmed that both deaths were due to hanging. Police have registered an accidental death case and started further investigation.
“From the evidence collected so far, no foul play is suspected. However, we are examining all angles as part of the procedure,” another official said.
Police recovered a suicide note written by Sangita stating that no one should be held responsible. Akanksha also wrote that her last rites should be performed at her native village in Mauda. “The note clearly mentions that they took this step on their own,” police said.
