A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

Christmas Party at Dabo Club Ends in Murder; 1 killed, another Critical

Dabo Pub Nagpur

By Dheeraj Fartode

A Christmas night party at Dabo Club ended in murder early Friday morning after a clash between two groups spiralled into a violent attack, leaving one man dead and another fighting for his life. The incident took place around 4 am near Pride Square, close to the club, within the limits of Sonegaon Police Station.

Police said that both groups were inside the club but arrived at different times. The victims and their friends reached Dabo around 11.30 pm on Thursday, while the other group entered close to midnight.

Trouble reportedly began inside the club when one of the accused identified as Mehul Mehul Rahate allegedly asked for the phone number of a woman who was with the victims. The woman came from Mumbai for the party. The remark was triggered a heated argument. Although the situation appeared to settle briefly, tensions flared up again once the groups stepped outside, said police.

Fight starts in the club

According to the police, a verbal altercation broke out near the tables inside the club around 2.30 am. The argument soon spilled out onto the street and escalated into a full-blown fight. Around 4.20 am, near an XUV 700 parked close to Pride Square, members of the accused group allegedly picked up sharp-edged weapons, iron rods and bricks and launched a brutal attack on the victims, said police.

During the assault, Somya Deshmukh and Mehul Rahate and their accomplices allegedly attacked Pranay Naresh Nannavare (28), a resident of the Sachin Pohewala area in Mahal, and Gaurav Brijlal Karda (34), who lived at Devyog Apartment near Chikhli Deepti Signal on Kalamna Road. Both men suffered serious injuries, especially to the rib area. Eyewitnesses told police the attack was sudden and intense, with several people joining in.

Friends and bystanders rushed the injured men to Orange City Hospital. However, Nannavare succumbed to his injuries during treatment and was declared dead by doctors. Karda remains in the Intensive Care Unit, where his condition is reported to be critical but stable.

Nine accused launched attack

Preliminary investigations suggest that six to nine people were involved in the attack. Confirming the case, Senior Police Inspector Nitin Magar of Sonegaon Police Station said offences of murder and attempt to murder have been registered, and multiple police teams are working to trace and arrest all the accused.

The police have launched search to nab accused and suspects including Somya Deshmukh (25) of Mankapur; Rohit Shembekar (23) from Hudkeshwar; Mehul Rahate (26) of Shanti Nagar; and Kamptee residents Raju Chawla (24), Rohit Yadav (27), Anuj Yadav (25) and Tushar Nankani (27). Two others, Rishi Sharma and Abhay Jamthani, were also present at the scene, and police are examining their role in the incident.

Accused from Mankapur and Kamptee

Police officials said some of the accused had come from Kamptee, while Deshmukh reportedly joined the group from the LIC Chowk area. Investigators are also piecing together the movements of the accused between 1 am and 3.30 am, when they were allegedly seen loitering near the club and surrounding localities.

Meanwhile, a spot panchnama is underway, and CCTV footage from Dabo Club and nearby areas is being scrutinised to establish the exact sequence of events. Statements of eyewitnesses, club staff and friends of the victims are also being recorded. Further investigation is in progress to establish roles and recover the weapons used, Police Inspector Magar said.

Dabo club in the dock over repeated chaos

In Dabo, there have been several past incidents where people were seriously attacked after protesting against harassment and it remained a major challenge for the police. Alcohol is served till late night and early morning  which make the nightlife especially for women chaotic and unsafe.

Due to the lack of strict police action, club owners have become careless. During a recent Christmas party, more than 500 people were allowed inside the club. Although minors are not allowed and Aadhaar cards are supposed to be checked, the management failed to collect Aadhaar details from around 125 people. There are strong rumours that many of them were minors.

Residents are fed up with the regular disturbance caused by the club’s customers. Police are considering registering a case against the owners and may also shut down the club for a week.

The world’s most powerful man was made to wait for 11 minutes in his car while an Indian cop took on American officials for their unwarranted interference in the US President’s security. KM Mallikarjuna Prasanna, Special Inspector General of Police of Nagpur Range, still continues to work with the same pride, wearing his patriotism on the sleeve. “Had they (Americans) deployed their personnel for area security, then the message would have been Indians are unable to protect VIPs in their nation,” recounted Prasanna on the episode that is one of the highlights of his distinguished career of a skillful investigator. The story of the IPS officer of 2000 batch is worth a film. In fact, a movie (Nagarjun-starrer ‘Officer’) has already been made by Ram Gopal Verma last year. His real life script als...
