A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Nagpur Police seized a whopping 1,555 kg of Ganja (Marijuana) hiding under fertilizer bags in a truck and arrested two persons in this connection. The seizure was made from a truck by the police while acting on a tip-off, police said. The driver and the cleaner of the truck were taken into custody, and a case was registered.

The accused have been identified as driver Someshwarrao alias Bujji Kotipillam (50), a resident of Rahulpallam, tehsil - Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh and cleaner Balemananaji alias Nani Paidaykapu Balema (25), a resident of Vaigamyapuram, District - Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.

On Monday night, the police got information that a truck bearing the number (AP-16/AT-7349) had left Orissa with ganja. The truck was going to Beed via Nagpur. In-charge of ANC Police Inspector Manoj Sidam and in-charge of Social Security Branch (SSB) Shubhangi Deshmukh started to draw a plan. The information was that the truck would come to Nagpur from Chhattisgarh via Bhandara.

As a result, the police laid a trap near Jai Bhole Dhaba in Kapsi. The truck was to reach Nagpur on Tuesday evening, but a tyre of the truck got punctured on the route. The driver fell asleep after rectifying the puncture. Still, the police remained on alert mode on the highway.

On Wednesday morning, the police spotted the truck and stopped it. On questioning the driver, he said that the truck was loaded with sacks of agricultural fertilizers. The police summoned a dog squad. As soon as dog Surya, who recently joined the City Police, signalled to the police, the goods of the truck were unloaded with the help of labourers. The sacks of Marijuana were found under the sacks of fertilizers. The cops immediately seized the Ganja worth Rs 2.33 crore and fertilizers worth Rs 49,400/- and the truck.

A police official said that the truck driver revealed the names of Ambadas Raghu Janje and Subhash Tukaram Pandule, both residents of Ashti town of Beed district as receiver of the Ganja. On the instructions of Nagpur police, the Beed police arrested Ambadas and Subhash before they could get the news of the seizure of Ganja. A police team has left to bring them to Nagpur.

Under the guidance of CP Amitesh Kumar, Addl SP Navinchandra Reddy, DCP Detection Dr. Sandip Pakhale, the arrest was made by PI Manoj Sidam, WPI Shubhangi Deshmukh, PSI Balram Zadokar and others.
