Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Strong police bandobast of around 3,000 police personnel including two companies of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) would be deployed on the occasion of Holi and Shab-e-Barat on Thursday and Friday. The focus of the police would be on preventing unruly activities, including applying colours forcibly, indecent behaviour with women and illegal consumption of liquor.

As many as 90 checking points have been identified by the police for fixed police deployment. Bajeria in Ganeshpeth, Tandapeth in Pachpaoli, Thakkargram, Lashkaribagh, Rameshwari in Ajni, Babulkheda, Ramtek Nagar, Rambagh in Imamwada, Jattarodi, Kapasi in Kalamana, Tajbag in Sakkardara and Hasanbag in Nandanvan are some of the sensitive areas of the city.
Residents of Ajni, Gittikhadan and Ambazari police stations complained about illegal sale of liquor while residents of Ajni and Gittikhadan were not happy over mismanagement of traffic. CP Amitesh Kumar, Joint CP Aswati Dorje, Addl CP Navinchandra Reddy and other senior police officers were present in the meeting. DCP Traffic Sarang Awad compared the programme.
