A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

  Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. Woman, going to hospital for treatment, killed in accident

A woman was killed when a speeding four-wheeler hit her scooter on Wardha road in Beltarodi police station area. The woman was going to National Cancer Institute for treatment of blood cancer when the accident occured on Tuesday at 10 am, police officials said.
The deceased was identified as Smita Kiran Sangatrao (57), a resident of Flat No. F-1, Nakshatra Apartment, Shilpa Society, Manish Nagar. Smita was living alone as her husband died a few years ago and the couple did not have children. Smita was diagnosed with blood cancer last year. Since then, she used to go NCI for treatment. She was going to the hospital as usual on Honda Dio on Tuesday at 10 am. Before reaching the hospital, Smita met her sister Aloni at her house in Chinchbhavan complex. When she was passing through Narayana Vidyalaya, a speeding four-wheeler came behind and hit the scooter. Smita fell on the road and sustained grievous injuries. She was admitted to the hospital where she breathed her last. Beltarodi police rushed to the spot and performed Panchanama. The police have registered the case under Sections 279, 338, 304 (a) of Indian Penal Code read with Sections 134 and 177 of Motor Vehicle Act. The police are checking CCTV footage to identify the four-wheeler.
