A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

  Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Kelwad police seizes HT cotton seeds worth Rs 85 lakhs

Unapproved herbicide tolerant (HT) cotton seeds worth Rs 85 lakhs were seized by Kelwad police. The police have booked the truck driver and owner of the transport company for smuggling.
The accused have been identified as truck driver Surendra Parvatsingh Dhakad (25), a resident of Ashok Nagar, MP and RGT transport company owner Mahaveer Pal, a resident of Panchawati, Indore, MP. The police got a tip-off about the truck containing unapproved seeds passing through Khursapar check post on Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border. Police Inspector Dili Thakur and his team intensified patrolling on the highway. After spotting the container truck, the police stopped the truck and discovered about 12,000 bags of HT seeds of various companies.  The police have arrested the truck driver.
An offence under Section 420 and 34 of Indian Penal Code read with Sections 6, 7 of Maharashtra Cotton Seeds Act, Section 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 1, 13 and 14 of Seeds Acts, Sections 278, 15 and 16 of Environment Protection Act. Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ola, Addl SP Rahul Maknikar, SDPO Ashok Sarambalkar, the arrest was made by PI Dilip Thakur, PSI Arjun Rathod and staff including Ravindra Chatap, Sachin Yelkar, Shridhar Kulkarni, Dhondutatya Deokate and two homeguards.

SP Rakesh Ola said that the action would be intensified against illegal trade of such seeds in the district. All the police stations in-charge have been instructed to keep watch on such illegal trade in their jurisdiction. Similarly, patrolling and checking of trucks is also intensified on the highways, he said.
