A Village Burnt Overnight: Tears, Loss and Survival in Dhamangaon Blaze

Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...

City police undertake special drive to trace 3,600 absconders

Tackling street crime is now top most priority in urban places for police force as such incidents immediately get highlighted and have possible effect on law and order situation. As Nagpur city too is witnessing the same trend, the city police has undertaken combing operations to arrest about 3,600 absconders.
A majority of these offenders, the police statistics reveal, are involved in body offences. A special drive is launched to nab these criminals and the police have succeeded in arresting 25 absconders on the very first day of the drive.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar informed ‘The Hitavada’, “With passage of time these offenders get emboldened and hence its necessary to nab and neutralise future threats.” Similarly with passage of time if we forget these absconders their number only increases. Thus, such special drives enable to arrest as many criminals as possible and try them in court of law. The police have made a list of accused who are absconding or wanted since 1985.  A special meeting of top rank officials was chaired by the CP in which the matter was discussed. An action plan was finalised to nab these criminals. Lists were made according to residential addresses of the accused persons.
The city police chief further said that in-charge of all police stations have been directed to take on these criminals and put them behind the bars in the next fifteen days. Special rewards will also be given to the policemen for arresting the maximum number of absconders, the CP added. Of these 25 criminals arrested on Wednesday, four are absconders while 21 are wanted accused. An accused absconding in dacoity case of 1987 was arrested during the drive on Wednesday. The police have been instructed to focus on those who booked in serious cases.
As per the rule, absconders are those  -- if the Court believes that any person against whom a warrant has been issued by it has absconded to avoid the execution of warrant, the Court may publish a written proclamation for his appearance. The accused persons who jump bail, parole or furlough are also declared as absconders by the Court. If the police filed a chargesheet in the case and the accused has avoided arrest, then such a person is known as a wanted accused.
