Sitting amid the blackened remains of his home, 32-year-old Nikesh Gawali carefully broke open a half-melted plastic box with a screwdriver. His hands shook slightly, not out of fear, but out of hope. “I’m trying to find my daughter Aarti’s gold earrings,” he said quietly, still focused on the box. “She’s just five. I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . All around him lay ash, broken tin sheets and charred wooden beams. The walls had cracked under the heat and the front room’s tin roof had caved in completely. What remained was a blackened debris all around - almost nothing to suggest a home once stood there. Nikesh earns his living as an agricultural labourer, like many in the village. Work is uncertain and depends on the season. Those earrings weren’t just jewellery - they were a small dream, a reward for his hard work,...
A new-born baby was abandoned by a woman on the footpath at Kingsway in Sadar police station area on Monday afternoon. Primary information with police revealed that a woman put the boy wrapped in cloth on the footpath and left the spot before anyone could get wiser. Vendors hawking custard apple on footpath in front of Punjab National Bank (PNB) noticed the cloth bundle and peeped inside only to find a baby who was probably born a few days back.
Sunita Parate, a resident of Pachpaoli, is a footpath vendor and she told police that a middle aged woman had arrived at the spot carrying the baby. This was around 3.30 pm and the mother seemed to be all alone and may have arrived from a nearby hospital where the boy was delivered. The baby was properly wrapped but looked pale and seemed quite weak.
Just as Parate's got busy attending a customer the woman sneaked away from the spot leaving behind the baby. As the boy was lying abandoned, Sunita checked for the woman in the area but could not locate the woman who had come with the baby a few minutes back.
Confused and yet concerned over fate of the baby, Sunita informed police control room about the incident. A team of Sadar police station reached the spot and took the boy in their custody. The new born baby was then turned over to Shradhanand Orphanage, said a senior police officer of Sadar police station.
The cops are checking CCTV footage from nearby units to identify the woman who had come with the baby at the said spot. An offence under Section 317 of Indian Penal Code were registered against the accused. Further probe is on.
