I got them made recently after months of labour work.” The plastic box, warped and blackened by heat, was one of the few things left from his two-room house on the outskirts of Dhamangaon village . A debt-ridden farmer has allegedly committed suicide at Dhapewada Khurd village in Kalmeshwar tehsil.
According to Kalmeshwar police, Mahadev Raghunath Ranade (48), a resident of Dhapewada Khurd village was under stress as he was unable to repay his loans. He committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling hook at his home in on Monday at 5 pm. He owned four acres of agricultural land in the village. His wife and son were at their farm when he took the extreme step.
A suicide note was recovered from the spot in which Ranade purportedly mentioned that his cotton crop was severely damaged last year due to the pink bollworm (pest) attack, the official said.
He had taken a loan of around Rs one lakh from his friends and other villagers for sowing cotton this year. But, as he was unable to repay the loan, he took the extreme step, said a police official, quoting the suicide note. Kalmeshwar police have registered a case of accidental death. Further investigation is on.
