It write official letters, scan bank data and spot suspicious transactions. It sounds like science fiction - but it’s now reality in Maharashtra. The state police have started using Crime-OS, a powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool developed under the MARVEL project (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement). This tool, built in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, works like the co-pilot feature in Microsoft Office - but to solve crimes. It helps police save valuable time and reduces the heavy workload of investigations. Crime Branch of City Police have arrested three burglars for committing eight house-breaking thefts across the city. The police have recovered 150 gm of gold ornaments from a jeweller who had purchased stolen property from the accused.
The accused have been identified as Kapil Ishwar Maskari (24), a resident of Sakharkar Wadi, Kalamna; Shubham Mahendra Marathe (22), a resident of Punjaram Wadi and Manoj Ramadhar Lilhare (34), a resident of Dipti Signal, Kalamna.
The burglars had stolen gold ornaments and cash collectivelly worth Rs 2.45 lakh from the house of Rajesh Nandkishore Sulbhear (38), a resident of Mhalagi Nagar on April 6, 2019. During investigation, the police have arrested Kapil Maskre and Manoj Lilhare from Hyderabad with their Pulsar motorcycle while Shubham Marathe was nabbed from Bele Nagar, Kamptee.
The accused confessed for committing eight burglaries in Hudkeshwar and Kalamna police station area. They had sold the stolen property to jeweler Pravin Barahate living in Bhagwan Nagar under the jurisdiction of Ajni police.
Under the guidance of Addl CP Nilesh Bharne and ACP Sudhir Nandanwar, the arrest was made by PI vinod Patil, PSI Omprakash Bhalavi, ASI Shriniwas Mishra and staff including Sunil Choudhary, Umesh Khobragade, Ravindra Raut, Dinesh Chaflekar, Vijay Yadav, Utkarsh Raut, Sachin Andhale, Naved Sheikh, Pravin More, Faraz Khan, Amol Bhakte and others.
